Change is good

Matt Westerhold

The last paragraph from the Murman report executive summary recommends Kim Nuesse not be reinstated as Sandusky police chief "unless the city is prepared for the wholesale replacement of the command and support staff."

So be it.

You are so correct So. Everybody should show respect for our elected officials whether they are Democrats or Republicans. I just wish that all of the bashing against Bush would stop.

Anonymous

Democratic sex scandals and elected officials.A good Erie County Commissioner would keep that thing in his pants/ trousers and not try and think with it.

Anonymous

The democratic party is positioned to replace Redfern with his clone. Anyone impressed with Murray's handling of City Commission afairs is in a vacuum. He's been on the commission for going on three years and is still lost. I'm a life-long Democrat but I'm voting Republican for State Rep. this year.

Nicholas, Forgive me I did not respond to your initial column. However, let me say this. You may be the beacon of hope to a newspaper whose professionalism and objectivity disappeared long ago. In leiu of that, we subscribers (and I am no longer one and won't re-subscribe until Matt Westerhold turns at least 12 years old) who have been reading this rag for 30 years, have found our level of frustration with the edititorial department, to be higher than the Sears Tower. The lack of objectivity and juvenial ranting, from the editorial staff, have illicited a like response from their readership(a response they seem to be surprised at). In years past, we have only been able to respond in snail mail form, which we all know found its demise in the SR shredder. The ability to respond immediately allows us to voice in support or disapproval. As for those who leap over the top, the ability to monitor and censor their comments is absolutely necessary. I believe a "membership form" containing Real name, address, phone, legitimate email address and screen name, with a login required, might eliminate much of the off-color remarks and personal attacks. I'll say what I feel but also try to keep it civil. However "IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO SET THE TONE AND THE CONTENT OF YOUR ORATORY IN ORDER TO INSURE CIVIL DISCOURSE". If you can not remain objective, expect your readership respond likewise. Good luck in your endeavor with the SR. I suspect you won't be there long as you are a different breed! A breed the RAGister will not support for long, as you will be a threat to their longstanding reputation as a biased, liberal, subjective news outlet. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it until the SR gives me reason to change!

Well if you were a true blue Democrat you would never vote for a Republican. Especially for someone like Enderle. You think we don't get any thing up here now just send Enderle down there to Columbus. They will laugh at him.

RC: ‘The ability to respond immediately allows us to voice in support or disapproval. As for those who leap over the top, the ability to monitor and censor their comments is absolutely necessary.’

Your writing is articulate and you appear to understand some of the nuances of journalism.

You must know that newspapers and newsmagazines as a business and as you knew them are dying, and that the web is the apparent future of the news media.

IMO, any interaction by any readership that the old media can promulgate is a positive.

To cut off the opinions of even the great unwashed is a questionable exercise and could be at the future expense of this small town newspaper.

These people are feeling their way – allow them the experimentation for the time being.

Of course Elsebeth uses her real name. How could she play the martyr while incognito?

Sorry to say, I'll be voting for a Rep. as well! When Politicians conduct their business the way they have been, it's no wonder the people are sick-n-tired of it all! We're too vote for "MORE OF THE SAME"? As far as I'm concerned, I plan to EXERCISE MY RIGHT TO VOTE for who I feel is best! Someone, please give the def. of a "true blue Democrat"! To "Stacy", I agree w/you 100%! To "So", jealousy has ABSOLUTELY ZILCH to do w/my decision! I'm sooooo TIRED of that being used as an excuse! Learned a VERY long time ago, it's a waste of EMOTION & TIME! As for the respect factor, maybe it's time our local politicians start showing it for the people they represent. It is after all, a 2-way street!

I always vote the straight Democratic Party ticket no matter who is running. I don't vote for the person but fully support the Democrat Party. I wish that we had more Democratic candidates like Robert Byrd and sometimes Democrat like David Duke. I will support Redfern, Murray and Ferrell because they are all about jobs. Jobs are what this area needs now.

It is truly sad when newspaper pander to the dregs of life. Allowing hatred and stupidity to be published in the name of the First Amendment just dumbs down our society. Shame of the Register for acting like an irresponsible childish rag. Gee, where is Annette LaCross? Who'd thought we would say that?

Anonymous

I'm voting Republican this year for the first time in my life. I didn't leave the DEM Party. It left me. I could never be comfotable with a party led by the arrogant, and self proclaiming Redfern. He's the biggest wanna-be in America!

Anonymous

Democracy; n pl -cies A form of government exercised either directly by the people or through their elected representatives; rule by the majority; the practice of LEGAL, POLITICAL OR SOCIAL EQUALITY! Even the vote of us DREGS (?) of life count! As for Robert Byrd or David Duke, are you serious? As for jobs here in Erie County....the only jobs they seem to be concerned with (LOSING) are their own! ARROGANCE is truely UN-ATTRACTIVE!

Anonymous

I have a novel idea. Why don't we all just register as independents and vote for the best qualified candidate. This way we would not have to say, "I vote Democrate or Republican no matter what". It is time we break up this good ol boys clubs of Democrates and Republicans and vote for the best candidate no matter what party they may represent.

Anonymous

Because someday Redfern is going to be Prez and you can say I knew him when.

Anonymous

I am a Democrate but I NEVER vote party line only. Anyone who votes strickly party line does not have the best interest of their county, state, or country in mind! People should vote for who is best for the job, NEVER party-line. This State Rep race is an example of that. I will be voting for the Republican candidate there because he will do a better job.

Another case where I will be voting Republican is for the Clerk of Courts. Barbara Johnson, like Chris Redfern, has not been doing her job and she needs to go.

So, please vote for the person who is best qualified for the job, not party-line.

Mr. Westerholden,

As I fully agree with the First Amandment and value anyone's right to speak, I don't necessarily think that means that a platform needs to be offered to all who choose. Especially an anonymous platform. There's nothing in the First Amendment that states "all shall be provided a conduit for their rhetoric". Please don't defend this social experiment's legitimacy with the First Amendment when the truth is... the blog is good for business.

Anonymous

Really? Should you be serious about that comment, just another Dem. I won't be voting for! TO: Nightstalker, likin' the way you think and am SERIOUSLY considering switching to Independant, although I would like to think I am already INDEPENDANT in my way of thinking as well as my decision-making process.

Anonymous

"...fully agree w/the lst. Amendment, I don't necessarily think that means that a platform needs to be offered to all who choose. ESPECIALLY an ANONYMOUS PLATFORM....What a freakin HYPOCRITE, cause I noticed you didn't SIGN YOUR NAME!

Anonymous

Once again, people on here are incapable of seeing the point. I'm not condemning the blog. I'm not condemning Mr. Westerhold. I'm merely saying that the real reason why the Register defends the blog is because it is extremely good for business. No more. No less. I have seen the vicousness of the bloggers on here. Would it really be a smart decision to be the ONLY blogger who identifies themself? However, if it became necessary to list one's real name in order to blog, I still would.

Anonymous

I must disagree with you, at least personally, as I am quite capable of understanding your POINT! Okay, the blog is good for business. That's what business is all about, to be profitable, correct? However, I too have seen the viciousness of the bloggers, as well as have had personal friends verbally attacked here. I have, on certain occassions identified myself, as I felt it necessary to speak out against the vicious, bigoted and racist comments being made, asking that they be removed! I find it rather odd that the bloggers are asked to REPORT ABUSE, when it is clearly evident in the writings. You'll find it on many of these different story sites. I also find it ironic when a comment you have made, not abusive and usually of the political nature, is removed because it's content just doesn't jive w/the powers that be! So be it! Isn't that what this particular comment site is about, BALANCING FREE SPEECH WITH DECENCY?! There is an old saying... you should never discuss sex, politics and religion..... When it comes to these topics, a persons' ideology is quite personal, and it seems to always lead into an argument! No two people are ever going to always agree on certain things, so how 'bout we just agree to disagree, RESPECTFULLY? When push comes to shove, I appreciate the opportunity to put my THOUGHTS out there.

Anonymous

Agreed. I think this is a prime example of what the blog could and should be. Although we may disagree, no one has resorted to the sophomoric personal attacks that I see so often on here. It is merely a debate and a way to be heard. And, hopefully, a way to find common ground.

FYI: Chris redfern chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party and representive of the families of the 80th Ohio State House District knows the Democratic party has some bad apples/Democrats.Mr. Redfern problem with the Register's blogosfhere, is not wanting the true Blue Democrats-Unions-Citizens-Public to find out about the Democrats that vote against the True Blue Democrats-Unions-Citizens-Public,in a free society we have to make sure we see the whole panorama of the human Democratic behavior behind the scene and ask ourselves what a True Blue Democrat is to the Public-Citizens-Unions.Chris you know Tom Ferrell Jr. isn't a True Blue Democrat and it behooves you to know the True Blue Democrays can see what's going on behind the scenes this election year.

Joe

It is sad that people attack Redfern's wife. What's the point? He's a big enough a**hole on his own.

Anonymous

Why don't you try taming down your sentence by using a few periods instead of one long run-on sentence cause its just too hard to read the way you write it without any periods and you don't make as much sense that way cause of your run on sentence so that way people could understand better what you are trying to say and I wish I could think of somemore things to say to keep this single sentence going but it's late and I'm just running out of things to think about but I'll keep trying if you want me to...........................

TT

Amazing, Sage. Do you ever come into contact with a situation in which you don't say one thing only to do another? If not, that explains while you're still here. I thought you were just going to watch, remember? Don't worry -your credibility's never been in question here; we all know you have none.

I agree wholeheartedly that whether or not your a republican or Democrat, you shouldn't run with your straightline. I voted majority democrat last election, but voted for Enderle. A family member of mine ran into some problems and I felt that I should give my representative a call. I couldn't believe the condescending way that Redfern talked to me. I told him I had rights , his voters whom funds his paychecks come from shouldn'y be talked to in the matter he handled with me. He did nothing but be a smarty pants, so I told him where he could go. I have a mouth , for the time being enjoy free speech. So until the next election, every friend, relative or even a stranger that breaks out with a conversation about politics is going to be told of my experience. It will be effective. Redfern is just biding time, trying to look like he is doing something, if he was truly about jobs, why are more people than ever in Erie county losing their jobs? Have you noticed the fast food industry? DOMINATED by older folks displaced by losing their jobs. Waking up every morning getting ready to go to a job that pays $6 an hour, working their tails off and wondering how did they get to this point in their lives at their age. I personally know 6 people that have lost jobs, 4 of them were 50 somethings, 3 lost everything they had, house etc. Redfern is all about eye candy, he has bigger things on his agenda. If you want your job, no matter how secure you think it is, you's better listen carefully and VOTE. I'm not promoting anyone on this blog, I know who I'm voting for. But as far a Redfern goes....I WANT HIM OUT. I can say that because I've dealt with him.

I want a future for my kids and grandkids, this is the beginning of the toughest times for all of us, think about it, how many people do you know that has lost their jobs? Read our foreclosure auction site at the Erie county sheriff website, I bet you know a few people on the list, if not in this months listings, keep watching, you'll recognize a name.

Everyone has the right to free speech, but if this blog were taken down, or if people had to sign their name, that doesn't step on anyone's right to free speech. The people at the Register pretend to scratch their collective heads because they have such an ethical dilema - "Gee, we can't take down the blog or edit it because that infringes on free speech!" In reality they have no such obligation - anyone can start or take down a blog. There was a guy in Huron who started a blog when we were in the middle of our school strike crisis because he felt people needed a forum to vent their views. After a while, he took it down because it became something other than what he intended - a place to spew hate. I don't think he liked being the provider of that. But he didn't infringe on anyones free speech when he took it down. This blog is good for the Register's business, and that's it. They don't provide it because they are good Americans and want to make sure we have our right to free speech.
