Change is good

Matt Westerhold
Mar 23, 2010

The last paragraph from the Murman report executive summary recommends Kim Nuesse not be reinstated as Sandusky police chief "unless the city is prepared for the wholesale replacement of the command and support staff."

So be it.

Lets get a new chief of police!

Anonymous

I agree with the conclusion if that means that the command staff will quit....what do we lose, a bunch of cry baby losers? Return the police chief and let the chips fall. The city commissioners can restore order and discipline to the SPD by having the police chief back on the job to clean up the police dept. Next, the city commission needs to release the city manager and the law director.

Anonymous

How about a replacement for Westerhold.

Anonymous

Tim McClung appointed to the Asst. Chief of SPD under Nuesse. It would save some running for him, and they all could car pool to the coffee shops. Hence less parking tickets to worry about.

Anonymous

Way to go..get a woman, Cheryl to do your sexist work this week and write a "woman's opinion". The SR is just like the Murman report...only full of opinions and no facts..right???

Could an SR reporter find out how the Chief's daughter is attending Perkins schools for free, when she lives in Sandusky. Now that would be a story.

Anonymous

How about an honest editor for the paper with integrity. Because we all know, that is NOT Matt Westerhold...

I know you're going to delete this blog as all my others...BUT REMEMBER Matt that night you sat in her house, secretly listening to her talk to the commissioners on speaker phone, don't you Matt.

Anonymous

Start with city commissioner's first.

PLEASE ALLOW ME THIS FORUM:

I just finished reading the story in today's paper (Sunday) about the homeless. More than 90 percent are local people. The shelters are over-crowded, under-funded, and this goes beyond Erie County.

PLEASE READ THIS STORY, PLEASE!

These are not people who were/are on welfare. Their possessions are in a shopping bag (not in the story, but I know).

These agencies need our help, some very basic needs, like toilet paper, paper towels, trash and garbage bags --- and yes, some money.

What brought me to this particular blog option, is because Mr. Westerhold's topic is apparantly the most importent and pressing issue in Erie County this year. Many hundreds of blogs, pro/con, for/against, opinions run rampant.

YET, NOT ONE SINGLE BLOG FROM ANYONE WHO JUST MIGHT CARE ABOUT THE HOMELESS.

I am 73, have very little, but I have been close to the "homeless" possibility. So, my heart goes out to these people. The tears I shed right now cannot be helped. Make fun if you will. But if there is JUST one of you out there who may be thankful for what you have, read the story --- and share.

thank you

that Matt went into hiding in the "underground" according to the printed version. What's the matter, Matt? Getting a little too hot for you?

Anonymous

This article isn't a threat to the SPD officers, is it? Implying Nuessee will get rid of all of them? Another good reason she shouldn't come back. You're worrying about her attempted career vs. the career of many dedicated
officers.

Anonymous

Nuesse, you may want to get your name on the waiting list at the VOA. They probably wouldn't want you there either!

That Matt Westerhold can not get through one month, one week, one day, one hour, one minute, one second without obsessing about this woman. See how good she is? She definitely took over his mind and is doing a pretty good job with a few others from the sounds of the comments I have been reading. She is a real good manipulator. Why some can't see that is beyond me. It is everyone else's fault. I can not think of one single person that has not been blamed since I started reading these blogs. Sad.

Anonymous

Seem like a threat to me. This guy(Westerhold) better get a grip! He is going downhill fast!

Anonymous

Let's see here, the SPD Murmur report called for the command staff to be replaced and suggested that they may quit....good deal for the city, we return the chief and the chickens will then scatter leaving us in better shape to hire professionals who can work as a team with the chief...Kline & Icsman created a nightmare and now the city commissioners need to reinstate the police chief to avoid becoming a party to the sex discrimination problem they created when they endoresed the direction Kline and Icsman took by hiring the investiagators who were going to find criminal charges....NOT, nothing but sour grapes from discontent men who do not want to take directions from a REAL WOMAN, not like their whimpy wives..

pamela Hall

If she comes back there will be chaos. Grievances will fly at a great expense to the city. She has already had several filed on her. These are not cheap. This report has made it clear that there are issues with her truthfulness and decision making. That report would be the first thing brought up in each and every arbitration hearing. She has been render ineffective by her poor management and leadership style.

Anonymous

The chief of police can not hire or fire employees. Only the city manager can do that. She can only sit back and be ineffective.

I have been an area resident for decades, and a Sandusky resident again for 3 years, and I am not aware of any huge problems rampant through the command structure of the Sandusky police department. I feel we are well served by the men and women of the SPD.

I do have a problem with Chief Nuesse being willing to subordinate our department in any way to that run by Chief McClung. The people in Perkins all know what an idiot he is....that was made quite clear when he requested authority to accept military surplus helicopters to patrol route 250. And from the disgruntled comments in online blogs about his leadership skills...

What was the big rush to push through a merger between the Sandusky and Perkins dispatch ?

I am all in favor of merging services, preferably on a county level, for any and all governmental services, that will result in taxpayers getting a bigger bang for our buck. But trying to push through a merger of the dispatch systems when there is no pressing need to do so ?

What exactly is the relationship between the two police chiefs ? Why was Chief Nuesse willing to subordinate our police department to his ?

I think city manager Kline needs to fire Chief Nuesse and begin the search for a better leader.

Anonymous

Every other time on the SR polls you could vote everytime you signed on. Not this time. That's weird (jk). Makes me wonder if there are only a select few that can vote over and over. Maybe even the SR? Oh yea, they would stoop that low on this one!

Anonymous

Is she gone yet?

Anonymous

Throw the baby out with the bath water. You are an idiot. Since when are their complaints about the whole command staff at SPD?? What an imbicilic assessment.

Anonymous

The command staff had the courage to stand up and report the misconduct of Nuesse. They have nothing to worry about, if she tries to ever retaliate, grievances would fly. But this is all irrelevant, because she will be unemployed soon.

Anonymous

Had Kline had the backbone to support the Chief in the first place we would not be in this spot. So now he has to fire the Chief to prove he did the right thing in the first place, which I seriously doubt. Then we get a new Chief and if he/she has the same relationship with the other law enforcement agencies, which is not at all unusual or uncalled for, we go through the whole mess again when the whiners say that there is a hostile workplace. You are working for the Police Dept. stupid!!!! That is a hostile environment, if you can't deal with it, start teaching kindergarten if you think you can handle it.

Keep the Chief, get Kline a backbone implant and send the Commissioners to school to find out what their role in Government is, drag the Twp Trustees along, just for good measure. It appears the Chief was the only one who really understood her role as a employee of SANDUSKY and she is being burnt at the stake. Didn't we learn anything from the Salem trials??

Anonymous

You sound so proud and courageous for your actions. To me, one of the general public, you sound like a buch of immature fourth graders. Proud, courageous? More like sqeaky littlle rats with inflated egos, who under closer examination would not be allowed to carry weapons. Deserving of the public trust? I do not think so.

sandusky register...keep the nuesse vs. icsman & kline story front and center... when all is said and done the real master of deception, incompetency & charm will be revealed. don c. icsman has run this city since 1998. his fingerprints are every where and the "chaos" lies squarely on his round weak shoulders.

The Sheriff's Coffee Hour. You have to admit she is correct in every aspect on that video the Sheriff's cakes and ale party. She was correct in pulling her personnel out of the Erie County Drug Task Force as it was SPD's Officers doing all the work in the City of Sandusky where you had one Deputy Sheriff being Greg Majoy at the head position trying to justify his means. The SPD police were fortunate to have Cheif Nuesse recognize this problem as the SPD officers were just being used to justify Majoy's existence. The drug task force now at SPD much better serves our community now not having to carry that extra baggage.

Anonymous

After reviewing the video tape, what I feel is the current problem with the "truth relationship" and the SPD relationship with the Chief boils down to RESPECT. I am/was a Chief Nuesse supporter from the time she started her tenure. We can sit and argue back and forth about this all day, look at our country, state, county, city. Every issue is nearly fifty fifty, with so much divisiveness. The assertion this is about a woman and men not wanting to follow is quite frankly "ludicrous". The ones that really suffer are the officers, through no fault of their own are subjected to these blogs comments. The men and women who faithfully and passionately are dedicated to this city. These men and women aren't going to quit, it's not in their nature. These officers want to make the difference. These officers also want a leader they can Respect, not one that they have to wonder if they are telling the truth or not. Read the below listed leadership qualities, read all of the report, and if you believe that Kim Nuesse should still remain the Chief in this organization, bring her back.

Before we get started, lets define leadership. Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. Leaders carry out this process by applying their leadership attributes, such as beliefs, values, ethics, character, knowledge, and skills. Although your position as a manager, supervisor, lead, etc. gives you the authority to accomplish certain tasks and objectives in the organization, this power does not make you a leader, it simply makes you the boss. Leadership differs in that it makes the followers want to achieve high goals, rather than simply bossing people around.

What makes a person want to follow a leader? People want to be guided by those they respect and who have a clear sense of direction. To gain respect, they must be ethical. A sense of direction is achieved by conveying a strong vision of

Trust and confidence in top leadership was the single most reliable predictor of employee satisfaction in an organization.
Effective communication by leadership in three critical areas was the key to winning organizational trust and confidence:
Helping employees understand the company's overall business strategy.
Helping employees understand how they contribute to achieving key business objectives.
Sharing information with employees on both how the company is doing and how an employee's own division is doing - relative to strategic business objectives.
So in a nutshell -- you must be trustworthy and you have to be able to communicate a vision of where the organization needs to go.

Respectfulness is the concern for a harmonious relationship with your family, friends and all other people in a society, respect should be a natural response of politeness which can not be demanded. The true identification of respectfulness values others for who they represent, with a concern not to look down onto other people. This results in the protection of someone else's personal or common values, so that opinions and persuasions do not harm the good intentions of someone else. Taking into consideration the views and desires of others and incorporating it into your decisions, i.e. being truthful to people. When you respect another, you factor in and weigh others' thoughts and desires into your planning and balance it into your decision making.

To vote more than once on a topic. Voted for the Chief to be reinstated, why? As far as I'me concerned, if this City was so willing to spend 20K+ of the taxpayers money to INVESTIGATE ALLEGATIONS of a hostile work environment, lying, wrong-doing, etc., they darn well should be willing to take it to the next step.....PROSECUTION, rather than buying-off (severance package) to just leave! Nice to see not everyone HAS A PRICE! Someone had commented back to me(on another site re same subject) that the City didn't want to go that route. They seemed to know what they were talking about. I would ask, why not? Now, it's been rather apparent over the last few years that the regular method of business is to just offer someone money to get rid of them, or when they really hold an important postion, they get a slap on the wrist, you know, diversion. The Union had commented that (if she were re-instated) SO MANY would be filing complaints and it's expensive. Thought that was already done, you know, as a WHOLE? Isn't that part of the reason one pays UNION DUES? You can get help w/a lawyer thru your Union, right? Or, is that different for the FOP? I think the CM, Commish's (at least 3 of them, of which one has run-away from home as well as responsibility in this matter) thought she'd take the money and run! She isn't, instead, she's fighting for her job, REPUTATION AND CAREER! If it's true the AG's office would pursue charges, than do it yourselves! Of course, we wouldn't know that FOR SURE unless they were ASKED TO COME IN, now would we?! See, that would be a TRUELY UN-BIASED REPORT, and more than likely not one filled with HE SAID/SHE SAID's or PERSONAL OPINIONS! It's been made quite clear that Murman has done work for our City Law Director for how long now, how many times, costing how much?! Any way you look at it, this whole situation STINKS to high heaven and it won't BE OVER just because she is terminated and the City says so. See, she's not the only one looking guilty of something here, and far too many questions are being left wide-open for the public. Remember them, they're the ones paying taxes and voting for your sorry, spineless, un-willing for some reason only God knows to seek Prosecution, soft behinds! Must be a reason! P.S. to think that 1 or 2 Comm. don't know what the CM is thinking, is like saying we all have STUPID TATTOOED ON OUR FOREHEADS! P.S.S. hey Matt, I don't believe you're in hiding! You've been printing quite a bit of things over the last 4-5 years, and that was well before Nuesse arrived! Of course, where there is a will, there'se a way to get rid of someone. We've watched/read that scenario unfold over the last few years now haven't we?

Anonymous

While I think your letter was well intentioned, most of it does not deal with Police Depts.. You can not apply those same thoughts of how to deal with a family or a business, to law enforcemnt. In Police Deptrs., you have an established Chain of Command. In this case, the City has allowed the Chain of Command to be tampered with by professional trouble makers and created this problem The only way out, is to put Nusse back to work and hope she can clean up the mess. To even think she owes any co-operation to outside agencies is a situation of ignorance. She is hired to protect Sandusky, not other areas. I think past practices of the Sheriff running the show have disturbed this relationship. Time to get back to the basics and put her back to work.

Anonymous

why doesn't the SR do a running total of how much the city has paid to Murman over the years? Since Icsman keeps turning work over to them, maybe they shoudl just replace Icsman with Murman and cut out the middle man. Instant savings!

Anonymous

you are correct... the outsourcing during icsman's reign 1998-2008 is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars...(squires, sanders & dempsey from cleveland) he plays a magnificent shell game of moving dollars through other dept. budgets to pay law firms that do HIS WORK!! the commission is ignorant of this game. sfterall, they work for him.

Perkins Resident

WE HAVE McCLUNE YOU HAVE NUESSE. DOESN'T SAY MUCH FOR EITHER THE SANDUSKY CITY COMMISSIONERS OR THE PERKINS TWP. TRUSTEE'S DOES IT. IT'S TIME THEY DO THE RIGHT THING AND OUST THEM BOTH.

Hearing there were 500 pages of the Nuesse report. What happened to the rest of the report and why did you stop at 224 pages?

Anonymous

I commend the Register for covering and being out in the open with the Nuesse situation. If it were not for the paper, a lot of things would never get out. I only wish that the Register would do more in exposing some of the other political maneuvering or posturing going on at city hall on other subjects. The transparency is not there and the reporters need to ask a whole lot more questions of what is going on at city hall.

Anonymous

What about a story on the gay midget that works as a seasonal employee at Cedar Point. Can you imagine going through your life being a midget AND gay? That would stink. This story must be told. Go forth, intrepid reporters!

Anonymous

Ya know what ,you ask what kind of person would do that? ..Nuesse supporters, SR .. I was just checking it because I found it so hard to believe that that many people would back her. Kinda thought that they were just voting and voting. Oh well, anyways, the anti Nuesse people got done with their fun weekend and started to vote anyways. YES! Ooops almost for got...I have more integrity than Nuesse or her followers...BELIEVE that!

Anonymous

What?? You commend the Sandusky Register? What is wrong with people? Why don't you get it? The register is biased, of course they are going to stick up for her and make all the city leaders look bad. That is all the public knows or sees is all the stories that the register writes about her that is all they can believe! What I hope, if she is not reinstated because of wrong doing, when it is all over with...the city finds a way to sue the PANTS off of the Register for the way they have slammed all of its leaders just for her!

I am the silent Majority who is SOO tired of Westerhold using the paper as his platform, the RIGHT people know who I am so it is unimportant to me that you dont. If you stand up for Westerhold, then you are as big a jerk than he is. I have a job I need to protect and I know that one day we will all be laughing at Westerhold and his "Nuesse Gate" rap......

I thought spd officers received a fair salary, more than me on paper. Can't they afford to buy their own meals and drinks. Why do they have to be comped to do their job, I think this is a big obstacle and why cops hate her

I agree with Westerhold

Anonymous

So, in plain speak, you're too big of a panty wast to give your name despite the fact that you're 'challenging' Matt W. to go talk 'face to face' with the officials you named in your original post? Let's et ths straight: you feel that you can anonymously (sp) challenge someone, using your job as the excuse for your anonimity (sp), to go do something without fear of having egg on your face when the challengee goes and does what you suggest (talk to the fat coppers)? Basically, you're a punk, then?

OK...I have a question for all these commissioners and "interim" police heads and our so called city manager. I personally seen two of our city snow plows they day of the blizzard, March 8th, plowing out Barnes Nursery on Cleveland Rd, clearly outside of city limits in Huron Township. Now just this past weekend I saw a Sandusky City cop sitting at Wiegles Point clear out in Castalia on Route 6, again clearly out of city limits in Margaretta Township...who is answering for this expediture of our tax dollars? I have to pay taxes for the CITY, not the surrounding townships, who is paying for that?

Anonymous

Stick to the point - it's probably something called "assistance", "cooperation", or just plain "help". Why is that a big deal?

Anonymous

As for the police officer sitting at wiegles point, that is where SPD meets Fremont or Sandusky County when they or we have a prisoner. That way neither one of us have to drive the entire way. We turn them over. It is all part of co-operation between agenies.

Anonymous

See, Nuesse followers have NO idea what is going on. Always running their mouth's about this and that and don't have a clue. You know what I find amusing? EVERY time they have something to say about why were the cops here, why were they there, why was a fire truck here or there, why did we get a snowplow on that day and not the other, all the stupid accusations, an answer (a sensible one at that) is given to them. When an anti- Nuesse person asks a question of them or Westerhold...ya NEVER get one! TYPICAL!

Anonymous

Get rid of the editor of the Sandusky Register.

Anonymous

I talked to your wife...and one thing she is not amsed by iss your small member...

Anonymous

You're a rocket scientist...........for sure.

To answer your questions, the city plows were on cleveland Rd, that day ref. mutual aid in trying to get Cleveland Rd. opened due to the largte amouint of idiot drivers that had the roadway blocked. We also worked with PPD that day on another portion of Cleveland Rd.

As far as Wiegles Point, this is where "We" SPD met with Sandusky County Sheriff's Office and Fremont PD, when we either are picking up a prisoner or dropping one off. It's approx. half way, so each department don't have to travel the entire distance. Sounds like saving money doesn't it??????????

Simply put, agencies helpiing other agencies!! I was work both those days, so look else where with your tax payer claims. I pay taxes in Sandusky also, so those were on me!!!!!

Anonymous

I see why Officers would meet at Wiegles Point, but I see no reason for Sandusky St Dept., to participate in clearing roads in Perkins Twp. Your idea of "simply put" could have repercussions when there is an accident and someone looks into the liability issues and why you were outside of your area, This is not YOUR exuipment, it belongs to the City of Sandusky and should remain, in Sandusky, as well as any employee on the clock.. I also think your attitude as well as others on the City payroll who bristle when someone questions if certain actions are on the up and up, reflects poorly on you. The residents have a right and responsibility to keep an eye on you and the elected officials.

Anonymous

You know....seems a lot of very defensive repsonses here, and do not call me stupid, nor am I a Nuesse follower. It seems highly intelligent that those of you on here that are city employees of some kind have to result in insults to those of us that pay your salaries. It's all about accountability.

I am simply a resindent of the city of Sandusky asking a legitmate question. All it required was a legitmate answer.

Also on behalf of the snow plow answer below...some of those "idiot drivers" had somewhere very important they had to be...personally, I was in an off road truck when I passed these plows, there was no other vehichles in the area.

Not to mention when a specific person involved in the city was asked this question, we were told they were getting salt from Barnes. However, only days later there was an article in the paper how Sandusky was one of the few locations with salt still available, not sure how many tons at the time, but it was here.

So...the next time I can't even get a plow down my street for two days and when they do show up, they plow everyone in because it's a dead end street, I will again ask, why are they in Huron township instead of Sandusky where they belong!

Anonymous

So, what's up with the story regarding the gay midget? Are you guys going to follow up or what? His story is compelling and also a little sad. It's be a great read for the sophisticants that live in the Firelands area.

Anonymous

You are simply clueless. Who is keeping an eye on you? Nosy, nosy, nosy! yiogt

Anonymous

AGAIN, mind your own business and quit being so nosy. People keep saying that they pay their (city employees)salaries, um, did we forget that they pay taxes too? I have seen MANY, MANY anti- Nuesse people get attacked here for having their opinion but that's ok. I surehope their are some nosy people butting in and keeping an eye on your life too.

Anonymous

What a great piece of editorial "Mumbo-Jumbo" Matt. How long did it take you to come up with this one????

Anonymous

So since you pay taxes and you are entitled to THE WORLD!!! Right? 'Cause you are the ONLY one who pays taxes, is that correct?? I bet you are the only one who is paying $4 a gallon for gas too huh? I know, you should STOP paying your taxes and that would show us all!! Guess what "rr" I pay taxes too, so does every other WORKING adult in this city, but I dont think because I do, that every City Employee owes me something. The city government is not what is destroying this city....look around you.....they can only do so much, eventually people have to take responsibility for their own lives and not just expect that because you pay taxes you have to rely on the government to do everythingn for you...

Anonymous

You people truly are ignorant....and that is being as polite as I can possibly be. I thought we could have an intelligent conversation with adults on this site...but I should have known better.

Get a clue...this is everyone's business who lives in this city, not the employees, but the residents!!

Once again, accountability is the number one thing here and if you don't care how they are spending your money, then go ahead and keep your head in a hole, but there are a lot of us who do care and just because I am not afraid to say something you think you can attack me personally for an opinion...that's good.

I don't rely on any government to take care of me and mine...I do that just fine on my own, thank you. I have people to answer to in my job, just as those in the city need to answer to their "employers". Evidently they/you feel they are not to be questioned.

Nosy; nosy about what? About what our city leaders are having the employees doing...we should have more concerned citizens like all of you...no wonder this city has been in so much distress, that's the mentality behind it.

What's the old saying, those that protest too much...

I am done with all of you clueless, defensive babies...maybe this should have gone on the readers forum in the paper were everyone could read it, then let's just see how many more people have the same opinion.

Anonymous

You say that you have someone to answer to on your job? You say the city employees feel they are not to be questioned? Isn't that part of the problem here with Nuesse? But all of the followers say she is being picked on, now which way is it? Can't be both ways can it? Well, what is your answer to that one?

Anonymous

Hey Matt maybe you can learn a thing or two from Tom Jackson he seems to have an open mind and questions lies told by Frankowski and Nuesse, now HE is a real journalist not the JOKE that you are!!

Anonymous

Why do you name call?? If someone doesnt agree with your views doesnt make them ignorant. Most people's posts on here are well thought out, well except Matt Westerhold's, so easy on the name calling, how adult is that??

Anonymous

Why did you move Tom Jackson's great post about "the ticket". You moved the June 5th story out and replaced it with the June 4th one. Just because he
pointed out the truth? Put it back where it belongs and readers don't have to search for it!

Ummm, she is FAT and haggered! She needs to perhaps be a spokes person for Jenny Craig! Although think about it. She now has sat on her big butt eating 20k worth of food ast our expense! She has proved she has a big mouth and is unedcated! Just listen to her!

Anonymous

No...uneducated people resort to name calling, such as "fat haggered (correctly spelled haggard), big butt and loud mouth". And do you know why they resort to such childih indulgences? Because they lack sufficient vocabulary skills to do otherwise. They are unable to speak without using such simplistic barbs so they are therefore unable to write any better either.

While Kim may indeed be run-down and careworn from her dealings with the city in recent past,it is MK, DI and the commission who has forced her to do so "ast" our expense. I have heard of completely ligitimate and accurate investigations being completed while working the employee in a limited capacity. I believe the Chief could have been collared rather than caged while this travesty played itself out.

Common Sense

Matt,

As the editor of this newspaper and this blog, it would be expected that you would check your blog for spelling and grammatical errors. Having said that, please refer to http://www.comfit.com/grammar/ to clean up the sentence "...with statements that are less THEN forthright". THEN is an indication of sequence while THAN is a comparison of two items. While you are at it, pass this llink on to your proofreaders.

Anonymous

I commented yesterday on the use of THEN (refers to sequence) and THAN (refers to a coparison) and even suggested you share a grammar website with your proofreaders. I see my comment was deleted. Reason? I have no idea. If you were offended by the comment, then clean up your work.

Also, why is the same blog ran two days in a row? There is certainly enough material on this site to do a topic a day.

Crackhead

of all the topics and all that is said about the register and it's staff, this is what you choose to answer? some limited influence? wow...

Common Sense

Matt,

Some habits die hard. As a former language arts instructor who insisted that students publish near-perfect pieces, it is difficult for me not to find the errors that appear daily in our local newspaper and definitely in the blogs.

When the blogs first started out, several people would point out the errors, stating that it reflected poorly on the Sandusky area to others who were viewing. Unfortunately, these posters were reprimanded by the angry posters.

Maybe, this would be a great topic for a Sunday editorial. How important is it for our local newspaper to hold itself to the higher standard of spelling and grammar practices? Possibly, you could make it a question of the week for the survey.

Finally, in response to your question, if you are asking me if I would like a position on the newspaper ("wanna" is "want to", I'm assuming), the answer would be I would consider it.

Mr White:

I acknowledge your education at Columbia University, arguably one of the finest if not the finest journalism school in the world. My first question to you is two fold: Why has the Sandusky Register chosen to invert the standard protections of libel and privacy rights of private citizens versus public officials or public figure? Following on that..Why is your story selection geared to providing opportunities to anonymous people to hurt private individuals (e.g. fatal auto accidents, deaths of children)

Also following on the above, why are factual comments critical of public officials deleted while the newspaper through its censorship and non reporting appears to continue to applaud the return of criminal libel to silence critics of the government. Would you agree that in view of the above, people do have legitimate criticism of the newspaper for appearing to abandon its role as watchdog on government?

just me

There are often a LOT of erros and typos in the Register - online and in print. But no one is perfect.

just me

See there. I said erros instead of errors. Made my own point. Go me.

Anonymous

My wish for the website is that she would just shut up. Can you make that happen? She has to puke that garbage everywhere and it is the same old same old over and over. God help us, give it a rest.

just me

I wish the paper would follow up more on it's stories. Like the auto accident that I am sure EB is referring to. You spill all the details about the accident but never follow up. How are the kids? Were there are charges filed? Are they still in the hospital?

Not just this particular accident, but I notice this paper does that a lot. Reports the first day or so but then we never hear another word....or updates - good or bad.

Mr. White:

As I was saying, why do you allow personal attacks on private citizens by anonymous posters?

TT

I remember reading something more by Common Sense under this "blog" comment page. How about putting it back up, or am I mistaken?

TT

If you're going to attack people for simply asking you to do the job for which you are paid (i.e. managing EDITOR) instead of doing it correctly the first time, then maybe this line of work isn't for you. Don't you take enough grief from all of us who make it a point to correct you in those poorly-written articles you scribble out from time to time? Take a hint, Matt.

TT

Don Lee sometimes joins you in idiocy anyway, and it's not like you're going to take any advice when people are trying to help you in your yet-fruitless endeavor to look like something other than an idiot. This very blog entry makes my point perfectly. Instead of simply ignoring the comment, or keeping a dictionary/grammar book handy next time - you didn't even have to acknowledge Common Sense - you get nasty, defensive, and downright juvenile with a paying customer. Everyone knows that you literally don't have the mangrapes to do the right thing (re: CHL holders), though, and if I were Common Sense, I'd go the extra few dollars a month for a daily Jounal, Dealer, or Blade than pay another cent to a mouthy, no-account fool such as yourself.

RHammons

What's your wish list for for our websites? RSS Feeds (I like to use news readers to get my news 99% of the time most web browsers and mail clients have them built in), a better funcoast.com (organization, diversity in columns, a reason to use the comments feature [ie. inspiring, or motivated writing]), a better organizational structure in general, whats the difference between the news on the home page and the news in the news briefs page? It's not clearly apparent.

What have you seen on other sites you would like to do here? Again, news feeds. Maybe a better means for video playback/article photo galleries. IE. Don't auto stream video, display photos in a more orderly fashion than raw pop up windows with plain text disorganized captions?

What have you thought of and said to yourself, why doesn't somebody do that?/Have you ever been using our site and thought, we really should do x?

I think my ideas are summed up above

WILSON

Funcoast isn't very fun. Or family oriented sometimes

When you acknowledge Elsebeth Baumgartner you give her creedence and make her feel important, which could not be further from the truth. Please for the sake of all who read and post on here do not even recognize this lunatics never ending rants, that never have any footing - EVER.

Thank You in advance,

Mr. White:

Thank you for clarifying your credentials and responding to some of my points. Noted that the the issue of criminal or seditious libel (criminalizing speech critical of government) was not addressed nor was the issue of invasion of privacy to portray others in a false light or "yellow journalism".

Looking forward to your future blogs if for no other reason than the columnist visuals have increased considerably with your visage. :)

Mangrapes?

Anonymous

Back in June when the personal information of CHL holders were published - posts were then made containing personal information of Register employees. Why were these posts taken down? Why is it perfectly fine for the Register to impose on the privacy of CHL holders, yet when the tables are turned they remove the posts. Just looking for an answer of reasoning...that is all.

Anonymous

Whadaya think? I think tt is really Don Lee.

Matt

Mangrapes??? What does "tt" stand for?

Tiny Testicles? Like on a mouse?

Perkins Resident

Why was factual information about Perkins Township taken down or completely deleted but attacks against a private individual allowed to remain?

It just seems that somebody like Elsebeth cannot post her facts or opinions without anonymous people coming out to bash her. Many people come to these news blogs to read her comments. Whether we agree or disagree with her is besides the point. She has the right to post comments. She uses her real name and I give her comments more credit than anonymous cowards that post their BS. What happened to Patrick?

Anonymous

Jeez Common Sense, lighten up, the blogs are not a classroom. What reely kounts iz if the messege komes akross.

There can be perfect English and proper grammar but what if someone does not understand? I can understand typos or misspelled word but what the hell does the following mean that I saw on another news blog? "Insofar as manifestations of functional deficiencies are agreed by any and all concerned parties to be imperceivable, and are so stipulated, it is incumbent upon said heretofore mentioned parties to exercise the deferment of otherwise pertinent maintenance procedures."

Bill T.

Elsbeth makes for some good print and so does EJ Baxter.

If the Register has no agenda, perhaps you can explain the Oct. 27, 2007 headline, "Study: Marina District PROMISES $25O million windfall" (emphasis added). I read the study. There are qualifiers, disclaimers, projections and assumptions....but no PROMISES. The Register never hid its' support for the project. How can you say, with a straight face, that you have no agenda and at the same time make promises out of assumptions?

TT

I apologize. Occaisionally, and far too often here lately, I have been skipping my medication. As a young person, I was addicted to crack cocaine and overdosed more than once. This resulted in a sort of Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde situation. I live with my mother and when they are not at home, the computer is my only friend. So, if you find me going off of the deep end again, please ignor me and delete any irratating comments. I always feel so bad after I see them and I fear my mom will read them. That would be bad, she could send me back to that very bad place, that I do not want to think about again.

my 2 cents

I have had a number of posts removed. None of which had bad words, were libelous, defamatory, threatening, or abusive.

Someone at the SR doesn't like some posts on some stories.

Also the whole "to my knowledge" makes everything else you said crap.

Lets see if this gets deleted

Common Sense

to the imposter who tried to pose as "tt": Your writing style does not, in any way, shape, or form, mimic the true tt's form. Go find your own title and then post. You make yourself look absolutely silly.

Anonymous

This imposter sounds like Elsebeth Baumgartner: the attack is pulled right from Ch. 5 of her book "How to fight over the Internets and win everytime." I digress - the crack cocaine is a little unoriginal. If it had been true, and truly me, it would probably be something much more teresting than a little coke.

"In the two-and-a-half months since I've been employed at the Sandusky Register we have not, to my knowledge, removed any posts because we disagree with them." Shows what you know. I've seen statements that were not clearly libelous - that simply told an ugly truth or made a sarcastic, snide remark (i.e., an opinion) - either about someone or some project or initiative that the Register, through it's horribly slanted writing, obviously backs. I think that most of the regular posters on this site can back me up on this one, and for someone being only on staff for two months - as opposed to having read this all our lives - you get awfully defensive for admittedly not knowing what has been going on before you decided to show up. You defy anyone to show you evidence to the contrary? How convenient - we're talking about statements deleted by the Register, so how could there be any solid evidence. The only ones you could probably find are those that were erased and forcibly reposted after readers called this "paper" out on them. For that, you'd have to go to the archives, assuming you keep accurate ones instead of just nice things about the Register and its allies. Anymore, when the Register is asked about the whereabouts of an obviously deleted post, or gets a demand to put said post back up, the request/demand is simply ignored. Maybe you'd better get to know people like Westerhold and Phares better before you defend this farce.

TT

Funny how you want "constructive" dialogue, Matt, when you do all you can to destroy this community through its only local news source. Have you forgotten the CHL debacle already? Or have you forgotten the general reception all of you print articles in the op-ed receive? Matt, take note: you attacked "Common Sense" for admonitioning you into doing your job instead of doing it the first time. You could either pick a fight with a paying customer or two(and intellectually, that'd be the optimistic equalivant of bringing a pocketknife to a gunfight), or you can just take criticism like everyone else does in their job, and do it better. If you find that it's too much, here are two suggestions.

1.) Work from home. You can write whatever you want, you can be your own boss, set your own salary, and you won't take crap from anybody because no one will have to read your stuff in their paper. Everyone wins!

2.) Quit and collect disability. For proof of disability, show them these blog entries and your articles. I can't imagine they'd deny you.

3.) Resign and keep heading west to another newspaper, in an even smaller, duller town that might appreciate your work (just stay away from my Blade!)

I hope this helps! :)

TT

Another thing Matt,

I hope someone at some point bothered to inform you that this poster PROBABLY was being very, very sarcastic. He most likely was having a big belly-laugh at how ridiculous this place has become, almost starting a war over two or three goofy people.

Anonymous

We understand you have some emotional issues and you likely have missed your medications again. But, you know, if this is upsetting you so much, you should not read it. Cartoons would likely be a better distraction for you under the circumstances. Most of us are very happy with the SR and their advocacy of Sandusky. Ask mom to warm some milk up for you so you can settle down. You are in our prayers.

Anonymous

Trueth? What a laugh. Subscribe to the Morning Journal if you want to read on time stories and accurate information which is not one-sided or fits the Publisher's personnal agenda.

Anonymous

To tt:

I did not make the post and find it obnoxious to adopt other's names or aliases as was done to you.

Kindly accord me the same rights and desist from making false acusations against me. This underscores the need for the Register to require verifiable email addresses for all posts.

Anonymous

It is obvious that you have not read the Ohio Revised Code and how it pertains to slander, libel and defamation. Please, for your own sake, study the law, it's all online.

And/or, locate an attorney who is friendly, and who has a decent law library, so that you can study case law. Couple of good ones Vs. the Lorain Journal.

The Register has been lucky so far. Probably because those innocent, private persons who are injured in many ways by these blogs are indigent, can't afford an attorney. And, these people for the most part were a type of bystander or spouse to the "person" who committed an ugly, sordid crime and whom the published story is really about.

Readers can write anything about elected officials, or public servants on the taxpayer's payroll. They live in glass houses and that was their choice.

I know Mr. Marburger. If you keep some of the evil things written and published about the private citizen in your archives, send him a few. Get some advice from a person who represents many newspapers in Ohio.

Anonymous

Elsebeth, I'm back, but still working on a new user name. Copy cats really mess up the efforts of those who respond to the "published story" Vs. what is written by other bloggers.

You know what, The Register is a decent newspaper. You can live in any small-to-medium city and the vast majority of readers of its local newspaper, will condemn it. If a newspaper has been around for 100 years, it probably has offended just about everyone....including law enforcement, prosecutors and judges. But this trio will continue to "act" as though this is not true. You see, once in awhile, the media holds public servants accountable. And they don't like that.

Hang in there Elsebeth. I know how you feel. Been there.

spider

What a bunch of bull.

But you are right about one thing ---- the public has the first amendment right to say/write whatever they please. HOWEVER, when the newspaper PUBLISHES IT, and if a private/innocent person is harmed, it becomes defamation even if the "author" remains anonymous.

You portray yourself as a better journalist.....because, you don't have a degree in journalism. Then, you boast about a Masters Degree in, what, embroidery? What an ego! You are a danger to the Sandusky Register and I doubt if anyone there holds any respect for you.

Crackhead

elsebeth--- go away. your posts to me are like nails on a chalkboard. we always know it's you whether you use your name or pretend to be someone else-beth. it's annoying. while i listened to you on rollye's show, i thought you might have been right on about somethings, but the more you post and i see what you could be about...

TT

My apologies Elsebeth, there was no excuse or provocation for that. As for "OK tt" I hardly am in need of your prayers - I'm a college student and do not live with my mother. Being happy with the SR's "advocacy" (read: sabotage) of this community tells us all quite a bit of what kind of person you are: someone who skipped out on reading comprehension in school, or someone who benefits from Register protection. Either way, between that and posing as me, your intellect, or lack thereof, shows.

Anonymous

lol - Matt, I appreciate your patience and fortitude to allow a little Chihuahua to keep nipping at your heels. In another post, he says he is a student. Likely living off of mom and having her do his laundry. I am sure you will not let this immature mind effect what I consider to be the BEST example of online newspapers I have read, and I read many everyday. I only have one suggestion for the SR. That is to clean up the old gas station behind the building and allow it to be used for a Farmers Market this summer. Just something to ponder. Best wishes.

Unlike you, I don't know all the facts concerning Chief Nuesse and the good old boys.

So until all the facts are known I would prefer to reserve comment.

However I would like to point out former assisant chief Gary Lyons is a cousin to the Erie County Sheriff, not as you say his "bro."

Anonymous

What is your relationship to the Police chief? Because, I'm surprised anyone would think questioning what and why a chief does something would be a smart thing to do. Of course people that are incapable of thinking someome they know might not be on the up and up. Of course if you don't think or read or listen to the news, it's easy to see where your head is, but I'm sure you think on occasion.

Crackhead

they want to teach her how the game is played here. she needs to come around to their way of thinking. if you mess with the bull--- you better go get a lawyer. why should we as taxpayers expect anything less? they are once again showing us how the game is played. this area is so messed up that i think they should go Perdusky and start over with a whole new setup. one mayor and a council.

You do not have YOUR facts straight. Last I knew, Terry and Gary ARE brothers. Any questions? Go here http://www.sanduskyregister.com/.... Don't feel bad though, Mr. Westerhold doesn't have much more credibility. All you have to do is read the S.R. on any given day and you can pick out alot of misinformation, or the lack of pertinent information. It is very evident Mr. Westerhold belongs to a Good Old Boys club himself. We all know how tight him and McClung are.

Anonymous

Are any of these people on the SR's published list of CCW permit holders, Matt? By the way, I canceled my SR subscription and thoroughly enjoy it when I hear other are doing so too. Hope you caused the SR business Mr. Westerhold. Too bad you weren't fired.

If this is really you, I suggest you stick to your legislative duties and let the administration duties to the City Manager. That is what he was hired for. Same goes to you Mr. Murray. You both risk getting us into deep doo doo and losing one of the best employees the City has. If you need to talk to someone, make it Mr, Kline. I think the gag order should be applied both of you.

Anonymous

tt,

Apology accepted.

crackhead, I believe you are impersonating the authentic crackhead as the calibre of your post is far beneath his usual insight.

What I'm about is truth and accountibility. This newspaper's internet standards do not promote truth seeking IMO. As another poster below points out there is a failure to grasp the distinction between public officials/figures and exploiting private individuals.

To What's in a name. Thanks, we need voices of reason.

Anonymous

Mr. Nicholas White:

Would you kindly disclose any financial interests you have in the newspaper either directly or through family members. What relationship if any with your predecessor Patrick?

My current question concerns if it is the policy of Sandusky Newspapers Inc to appropriate private citizens' names or privacy rights for commercial advantage through internet story selection?

Anonymous

Don't forget who was there conducting the  "inquisition" targeting Chief Nuesse...those "Good ol Boys" who are also responsible for getting us into the Marina District mess. How many other uncompleted projects do we have since we seem to turn over city administrators and get nothing completed? Wonder Mike Will left the city....perhaps it was because of those same "Good ol Boys". I hope the SR comes out  and presses each of those 3 commissioners for their part in this fiasco. Next, the SR needs to come clean on the misguided Marina District project hype and spin and stop playing politics with the city's future. There seems to be so many serious leadership problems at the city manager and city commissioner levels. Let's get on with an  entertainment tax increase and hire some economic development specialists who know what it really takes to spur development instead of relying upon the "Good ol Boys" because the city needs living wage jobs and not condos.

Anonymous

Matt, congratulations on having a backbone. No doubt this article will cost you with the popular kids in the City, but - and I don't say this very often - you have done the right thing.

Let's just hope these scumballs have the brains to realize that they've severely underestimated the ol' gal. They are losing at their own game. Time to go home, take a time out - and if they want to play again, be better sports and play by the rules from here on out.

As Tina Fey aptly noted on SNL last week, "Bitches get things done."

I just realized that, all of a sudden, I'm older than the good old boys.

I believe Nuesse has uncovered a lot of things going in this area that shouldn't be going on and she is trying to clean it up, but the higher powers in this area including the high power in this county, especially, will not allow her to go any further. It is like anything else, it is very tight and they all stick together and look the other way, but she doesn't. She is an officer of the law and there are people that are going to want her out because of the things she has uncovered that are simply not right. I hope she doesn't give up on this town and that the commission will support her instead of giving her a kick out the door. I think she is too close to exposing what is really going on and she needs their support. Let her clean up the town. Unless she hasn't done anything criminal, she has my support and she should be given a chance. Things have been status quo for much too long.

what?

That is a laugh, Crandall a good old boy?

Anonymous

To Matt: You haven't told us anything. Your paper needs to get to the facts and do your job! You expose a story with no facts to support it and leave us all hanging as to what is really going on with our police chief. Maybe, this kind of sensationalism sells papers more? Just write the true facts and don't led us up to it! If you are that close to Nuesse, then let her tell her story.

Anonymous

Westerhold you are right about the Task Force. That issue on the ballot was nothing more than save Greg Majoy's job, the "ONE MAN BAND". Commissioners wanted to to get part of that money at the same time and don't forget about expansion of the Erie County Jail. Last tactic used to try to get it voted through was monies would possibly be used, a few years down the road, for the court house security. As you know it was heavily defeated and Sandusky PD progressed ahead running their own drug unit instead of having the "ONE MAN BAND" sit at the top holding everyone down. Hope the voters remember this when they go to vote for Erie County Commissioner, VOTE FARRELL OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!

From here on out, we bloggers will hold your feet to the fire on that one!

Perkins Resident

Nicholas, In the past, the Sandusky Register routinely took down posts related to Perkins Township. Much truth about Perkins was posted by anonymous people who were too afraid to state publicly what was really going on in Perkins. Months ago, any topic about Perkins was a HOT topic that produced hundreds of comments. But those comments were quickly taken down. People who posted just got tired of composing a comment about Perkins only to see it completely erased. So now, you don't see very many people posting comments about Perkins. Also the Sandusky Register routinely removed any news article from the "Top Comments" to keep people from posting about Perkins. IMO, the Sandusky Register made sure that the less people knew about what really was going on in Perkins, the better. When it come to Perkins, the Sandusky Register does all that it can to protect the "Good ol' Boys" in Perkins.
