Stahl: Best Good Old Boy

Matt Westerhold
Mar 23, 2010

City commissioner Craig Stahl was almost breathless when he read a letter to commission Monday from Erie County Prosecutor Kevin Baxter refuting the importance of another letter Baxter sent last week to Don Icsman and Matt Kline that stated the Murman report contained factual inaccuracies.

The way Stahl embraced Baxter's denial of his earlier admission that Murman got the "details" wrong was so sweet. Kevin must have taken all weekend to figure out how to word that second letter. Baxter had just finished writing it a half-hour before the commission meeting, Craig said. And Craig was just so excited to be the chosen messenger. He read it as if it were a letter from the Pope.

"Congratulations on being Kevin's water boy," I told Stahl after the public meeting ended.

"Maybe I am being his water boy," Stahl responded after some additional chiding.

Yeah Craig, that's exactly what you were when you delivered Baxter's second "cover your (behind)" CYA letter in less that a week.

It's just too bad you didn't have any time to address the Darden report, which was actually researched and thoughtful. While you encourage and celebrate Baxter's attempts to manipulate the process for Party and power, Darden actually did the work you should be doing: Digging for the truth.

But you were too busy trying to be the best Good Old Boy you could be to actually pay attention to "details."

It is nice to see Vermilion win some football games. Nice job over there coaches!

Coach Obergefell is the best coach in the state who is not the head coach of a varsity sport. Period.

Anonymous

so when is coach's butterball son ganna be the next starting tailback? He already plays varsity as a freshman, watt is the perkins football comin too. Right now its 2-4.

A quality or trait that distinguishes an individual or group....Evidently the character of our NEW coaching staff is that of nepatism, favoritism, in-difference towards veteran players, or maybe it's just plain politics in sports?! The comment was made it would take 3 yrs. to build a team here. Well coach, the Seniors are done this year, you'll have your own team (no left-over Farlow players)! When all you hear is how GREAT the Fresh. & Soph. classes are and that next year we should have a good team, kinda makes you wonder! Didn't realize our Jr. & Sr. players sucked so bad! NOT! I believe our upperclassman are showing an awful lot of character, something that I believe at least half of our coaching staff is unable to comprehend! They say winners celebrate and losers make excuses. I believe our TEAM deserves better! As a parent of a football player, I wouldn't want my son to continue reaking havoc on his body for a coaching staff that has already dismissed this season for next! PS - aren't athletes suppose to EARN their spot? Cause if you're just going to GIVE something to a kid, for whatever reason, what kind of CHARACTER does that show, or help build?

Finally people are starting to see this man's agenda . Why do you think so many coaches left May I add on their own . They could see this 3 years ago .I FEEL SORRY FOR THOSE JRS AND SRS WHO HAVE PUT TIME INTO THIS AND GET NO REWARDS.PACK HIS LITTLE GET TOGETHER AND SOUND YOUR FRUSTRATIONS .

perkins lost to a bunch of midgets. look at the size of the smcc kids and look at the size of perkins. how embarrassing!

Better coached Better disciplined! Call it what you may,it should have been worse!GO PANTHERS!

Anonymous

Amazing that before the game the head coach looked like a defeated man. Too bad he couldn't schedule a cupcake sbc schedule !

Anonymous

The only midget with your program is your number of wins !!!!!!

having played under both farlow and brausch i was there to watch how the few outspoken parents were able to force farlow out, after all he had done for the school, only to watch brausch turn his back on my class. the only thing that kept the underclassmen from playing then were those other great perkins coaches that decided to leave on their own, at least they had the courage to stand up to him. as much as i love perkins football, i feel it does me some justice to see this man drive the program into the ground because he is just like those parents who brought him here. oh by the way coach farlow, who apparently wasnt taking perkins in the right direction, ended firelands two year losing streak this weekend. glad to see good things happening to people that deserve it.

Thank you for speaking out, you should know BECAUSE YOU SAW both sides. Im sure chapman was happy with braush his son played !MY, OH MY ,HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED !

How can all the higher ups in the perkins school system stand back and ignore whats going on in our football program!!The coach has lost his kids respect and most jr. and sr. have no desire to play for this man.The time has come for him to be acountable for his poor play calling, poor starting lineups, and poor actions around the practice field. There are parents in 7th and 8th grades looking to get there kids out of there before they get to high school. What happen to the days of PERKINS PRIDE!!!

Anonymous

The pride left when farlow was let go !This man has no idea what Perkins stands for or what is its history ! Go back down south!

Anonymous

it doesnt matter who they hire in perkins because the community has special interests. We hired a man from out of town and it happened to be another man with special interests. Farlow was great becuz he wasnt about favoritism. Until the older Painter/ and younger piper had to start on the O-line in 03. With first team all-conference michael kennedy on the bench with division 1 college football star jeremiah fennel. Ever since I have seen more favoritism than i could hope to imagine, and i have been comin to games since the 80s. There was favoritism in every class since. Lets look at the quarterback situation that forced (2 sport all-ohioan) kyle hallock to become a golf star when he competed for the "2nd" string quarterback job. Open ur eyes and realize we all need to change.

What NEEDS to change is the attitiude regarding politics in sports. I have heard people say that "you have it wherever you go". Hmmm, that makes it okay? It is rather disheartening when you have to watch this kind of crap go on, and I'm just a parent. Imagine how the kids feel! LIFE LESSONS our kids learn through sports?! Watching it, being a part of it for a number of years, dealing with it and doing our best at DAMAGE CONTROL on a daily basis! Trust me, EYES HAVE BEEN WIDE OPEN FOR THE PAST 16 yrs.! Grow up people, can't live through your kids, nor should you, it isn't healthy!

Why alll about pirates we HAVE notestine and staff! Go panthers !

My thoughts

Let's lure Notestine away from SCCS.

NEVER WILL HAPPEN!

If you are all perkins fans i dunno what to say, thank terry chapman for a change in head coach here. You are all beating a dead horse because no one is going to get radical enough to try to have something change, keep talkig on stupid forums like this and thinking your angry comments are going to get something done. You want something done go do it yourself instead of talking about it here. Coache's don't play favoritism in my book brent adams, alan speer, obie, roesch and many more are fair good coaches who don't play favortism. This was going to be a down year, because well as you can tell are players don't play hard, dont tackle hard and dont want it that bad, sorry if that hurts moms and dads but i have watched every game film and the only people that look like they want to be out their is a handful of kids. btw in 03' mikey and finnell both started and if want ur kids to learn some lesson in life maybe u should try the baseball or track team in the spring, two prestige sports in the state of ohio with the 2 best coaches at perkins in my opinion.

Larry

St. Mary's is better coached than Perkins in football. Perkins has the athletes but also as this thread is proving it also has the attitudes...

Playing a freshman over Jrs.and Srs. is a joke.Punishing JV kids for coaches bad calls on Fridays is a joke(when they dont play a down because He plays 9th graders in the 4th on fridays). If you do not see whats going here I dont know what to tell ya becuase there are plenty more reasons i can sit here and give ya.Parents in the stands sit there every week bewilered at this guys gull.Rumor has it the $HIT WILL HIT THE FAN this week so be ready!!!!!

Anonymous

And what I mean with that last comment is the higher ups in Perkins are finally looking into this and I hope they just make thing fair for all and put a stop to this agenda!!!

Anonymous

"mikey and fennell" i may have mixed up 03 and 02... but im certain that the 2 coaches sons were on the line over them when kennedy was playing jv as a junior.

facts

Yes, Kennedy played JV as a junior that is correct. But so did both of those other two "coaches" kids. I have the films. Plus Kennedy played center while the Painter kid was a tight end and the Piper kid was a tackle. And when did Jeremiah Fennell play Division 1 football?? Pretty sure he wrestles. You better know all the facts before you start naming names.

Anonymous

Jeremiah plays football at the same school he wrestles at. He told me he was playing fullback but i dunno if that big lug is, he sure does have the wheels for that position though. kennedy, painter, piper and finnell all played different positions in high school, please you think rock would let something like that happen..... come on now you must really not know the rock.
