Stahl: Best Good Old Boy

Matt Westerhold
Mar 23, 2010

City commissioner Craig Stahl was almost breathless when he read a letter to commission Monday from Erie County Prosecutor Kevin Baxter refuting the importance of another letter Baxter sent last week to Don Icsman and Matt Kline that stated the Murman report contained factual inaccuracies.

The way Stahl embraced Baxter's denial of his earlier admission that Murman got the "details" wrong was so sweet. Kevin must have taken all weekend to figure out how to word that second letter. Baxter had just finished writing it a half-hour before the commission meeting, Craig said. And Craig was just so excited to be the chosen messenger. He read it as if it were a letter from the Pope.

"Congratulations on being Kevin's water boy," I told Stahl after the public meeting ended.

"Maybe I am being his water boy," Stahl responded after some additional chiding.

Yeah Craig, that's exactly what you were when you delivered Baxter's second "cover your (behind)" CYA letter in less that a week.

It's just too bad you didn't have any time to address the Darden report, which was actually researched and thoughtful. While you encourage and celebrate Baxter's attempts to manipulate the process for Party and power, Darden actually did the work you should be doing: Digging for the truth.

But you were too busy trying to be the best Good Old Boy you could be to actually pay attention to "details."

Bottom line is... For some of you i think you need to actually go to the games and watch. They are young and they have about 9 seniors and 1 is out who was a top 3 player on the team as well. Linebackers who are obviously playing well is their 2-0, I think Norwalk will be a test but, Knuckles, Mcdowell, Bird, Finn, Priestas and anyone else in there will all get it done. The Secondary is my only question as far as this game goes. Lock down bird with Norwalk’s 1 and Bryant with their 2 and I think you u could contain them, maybe not stop but contain them, Perkins defense will be swarming Friday. I hope Norwalk wins for the sake that most of those seniors have seen significant playing time or were starters for 3 or 4 years. The maturity of the truckers is much better. Talent wise Norwalk has the pirates around the board in some area’s but the pirates also have talent that I think can step up and make it a game, remember we are talking about Norwalk.. Say what you will but just like every year when your a pirates football player you have that expectation of go out their and putting one on em.. Norwalk obviously has the upper hand, but we'll see around 10-10:30 Friday night what the final verdict is.

It has been nearly 17 years since the last time our football team has participated in the Ohio High School tournament. Once known as a powerhouse football program, is now the laughing stock of the state. Whose fault is it?

First and foremost I believe that our coaches, teachers and administrators (a.k.a. “The Money Makers”) need to be held accountable for the lack of success that our students are experiencing in both the classroom and on the field. Yes, it has been the coach’s fault for not preparing the kids to succeed on the field. Yes, it has been the coaches, teachers, and administrators fault for not being able to keep the more athletic / talented kids on the roster, whether it be through not assisting them more with their academics or not mentoring them in making the right decisions in life (which would eliminate most kids from getting in trouble).

Some people scream "it’s the parent fault that those kids aren’t in playing football because of their grades; it’s the parent fault that those kids aren’t in school because they got in trouble outside of school." Yes, to a certain extent the blame should be placed on the parents. However, what these people fail to realize is that in today’s society the successful teachers, coaches, and administrators are also mentors. Meaning, they mentor kids and show kids how to be successful in the classroom, on the playing fields, and in life! The kids who aren’t doing as well will receive more attention; will have their problems clearly identified; and will at least receive an opportunity to have his or her problems address. Therefore, as our student’s coach, teacher, and administrator or A.K.A. our student’s leaders or mentors, you should challenge your self to become more of a mentor to our kids and less of the traditional role of being a coach, teacher or administrator.

As a former alumnus/fan/supporter of Sandusky High School, I would like to see our kids succeed and thus, I leave by saying stop complaining and just “GETTER DONE!”

Why condos on the North??? Why would
people want to live in condos without
a course RIGHT THERE? Or are they gonna
"save" the course for condo dwellers???
Vineyards? They could grow across the
street, at the driving range or even
by the South course.
Can't wait to see how the story ends.
But we love the North Course like a lot of other golfers: WHAT A WASTE!!!

As the author of the internet post said concerning the bussing issues.....
" Ha Ha Ha Pirates Suck"

I just hope this meet hosted by Perkins is better run than the meet hosted a couple of weeks ago. The course was not correct--200 yards longer and the results took hours--in fact they never produced results for the junior high race. I thought this was their home course.

Anonymous

Talented young men from both teams will be coached by classy brothers. Good luck to all but we hope the Pirates prevail!

TT

Don't mean to be a downer, but doesn't the Register drag this exact headline out every year? There's got to be more to Perkins -P.C. soccer than this, right?

Anonymous

Perkins meets are awful they need to produce result. i think that another team should host this meet. due to the fact that junior high results were never produced. we have been wondering how are junior high did. What did they just say. oh girls you guys won and give them a trophy? erie county meet better be smoothly run and we better get results this time :[[

Bob

I believe that the girls SHS school record was broke by the Waddington girl with the 18.52 mark.

All i heard all summer was how good tinker is and THEY flushed him quick . Could it be no one on the pirate staff knows how to coach the spread ?

Anonymous

can anyone on that perkins team catch a ball? holy crap pirate receivers did your hands in molasses or something. or maybe brausch can drive his humdinger hummer to the forest and get some tree sap for them.

Anonymous

Moved here from N.Ridgeville-where I had 8 or 9 golf courses to choose from, came here and you have to drive a ways to get to a decent course-Thunderbird North is old school-(except for #12 lay-up on the drive?), the course drains well and plays steady scores all year.
Keys is a joke-Mills floods-Woussicket tricked up. The south course is soooo wide open you can just smash it and still wedge to any green. I can understand retiring and getting out of the business-then sell it and move on-why destroy what you have put 47 years worth of memories into. Let someone else-"the kid with the blog", take it on and make it his own. You haven't raised prices like the other clubs because you cater to the average duffer-you built awesome outting facilities for the companies to use-that's why I golf there-on the north.

Anonymous

Hmm not that, teaching a spread offense is not something you must be taught for many years to be able to run, its more of a question of the linemen they have protecting tinker. If tinker has no line which the pirate lack size and overal ability their i think you have a problem, in this case we do. Put the line of last year or 2 or 3 years ago and i think the pirates would have all day to throw.

From my experience it can be very stressful and intense when you are hosting and in charge of a cross country invite. There are so many things that can go wrong. When results begin to take a long time to produce things can be stressful knowing that coaches want results. It does not help to have parents, runners, and coaches breathing on the neck of the people working the meet. I do not think it is right that a coach and team has to leave a meet without results, but sometimes things are out of your control. I remember leaving Fremont this year without paper results, but they were emailed later on. I think that Chris Green results did take longer than normal, but we did finally get them. I did not mind because we were a team that did not have to travel a long distace to get home. As for Erie County, I think the meet was ran very well. Things were organized pretty well. If results seemed to take a while...get used to it. Very rarely will you get results right when you want them. Nice Job Perkins!

Perkins secondary is about as weak as it has ever been. Actually, its down right terrible and I would take back Bickell, Doster and them guys in a heart beat. The outside linebackers were no help either, so despite how well the d-line and inside backers play, Margaretta ran for 300 yards + to the outside. If I were coach Brausch I would spread my talent out and play lil birdman at outside linebacker. Unfortionately, he is very good finess coach who will not do this and continue to play a fast paced game with slow players.

I would play all freshman
