Stahl: Best Good Old Boy

Matt Westerhold
Mar 23, 2010

City commissioner Craig Stahl was almost breathless when he read a letter to commission Monday from Erie County Prosecutor Kevin Baxter refuting the importance of another letter Baxter sent last week to Don Icsman and Matt Kline that stated the Murman report contained factual inaccuracies.

The way Stahl embraced Baxter's denial of his earlier admission that Murman got the "details" wrong was so sweet. Kevin must have taken all weekend to figure out how to word that second letter. Baxter had just finished writing it a half-hour before the commission meeting, Craig said. And Craig was just so excited to be the chosen messenger. He read it as if it were a letter from the Pope.

"Congratulations on being Kevin's water boy," I told Stahl after the public meeting ended.

"Maybe I am being his water boy," Stahl responded after some additional chiding.

Yeah Craig, that's exactly what you were when you delivered Baxter's second "cover your (behind)" CYA letter in less that a week.

It's just too bad you didn't have any time to address the Darden report, which was actually researched and thoughtful. While you encourage and celebrate Baxter's attempts to manipulate the process for Party and power, Darden actually did the work you should be doing: Digging for the truth.

But you were too busy trying to be the best Good Old Boy you could be to actually pay attention to "details."

Come on! Give this coach a break, Every father out there knows that they want to see their son playing in a game, so for you fathers out there, Mr. Brausch is just doing what you would do given the chance, and don't deny that you wouldn't..........after all he is not at a ball touching position, its a tight end sealing the corner, so far he hasn't been knocked to the ground.

Way to go little Brausch, Keep up the work, we'll need all of your buds next year!!

Anonymous

Oh, I believe I can safely say that there definitely is some "ball touching" going on at Perkins. His decision making is proof of that.

Anonymous

Not EVERY father would react the way Brausch is acting. Not EVERY father who is a coach is blind to the fact that their son or daughter has little talent. Even Piper or Painter's son's never played varsity as freshman. Freshman have thier place and need to work with their own classmates building a team relationship. I can't see anything positive coming from playing his son becuase he wants him to letter as a freshman. Is he a standout player on the football field? This is just going to drive a wedge in between the kid and his friends and the other parents and the head coach. There are other players who deserve to be out there on that field before this freshman.

Anonymous

I don't believe that ALL fathers would be so willing to set their own child up for such riducule! It isn't lil Brauschs' fault, and there is NO ANIMOSITY towards that young man! We're not to question, right? Tell ya what, when coaches are yelling, screaming, cursing, threatening and demanding that our kids play TO WIN, than ALL Coaches damn well better be coaching to win! I can see Fresh. dressing on Fri. nights to get a feel for the game, but when you start inexperienced players over experienced, please explain the rationalization! It doesnt' matter if they're in a ball-touching position or not! Seems to me, more focus is being paid on Football 09-10 than that of 07!

Anonymous

So now we are going to probe our children with talent meters to see if they can qualify to play, Give everyone a break!

Anonymous

...will be the highlight of some of these kids' lives, which, frankly, is kind of sad. So the coaches should be as objective as possible so that the right kids get p.t. That being stated, parents need to be realistic. Many kids who think they are the next Emmitt Smith are in reality marginal at best. And marginal in the SBC means they would be riding the pine in a real h.s. football league.

Anonymous

What about all the cussing after practice directed at the kids mr braush? Didn't they fire rock supposedley for that reason ?Then to cuss a parent out ?Oh by the way nice 2 pt try at the end .. 95% of the coaches would have sent the game in to 2 overtimes.

My thoughts

The try for two was the correct thing to do. You play for the tie at home and go for the win on the road.

TT

On one of Edison's punts, I heard he had Tyler Dix in to return at a good point. Why, then, did the coaches instruct him from the sidelines not to touch it? It rolled down to the two; is Brausch TRYING to lose?

Anonymous

Go for two what a joke, some one said it was a te pass to his kid . If that true he should NEVER coach at that school again!

Anonymous

Ha s he ever met on a Sunday ? Has he ever broke down films with his staff to coach the kids ?THAT SHOULD ANSWER YOUR QUESTION!

sandumpy

SAD SITUATION OVER AT PERKINS GLAD IT'S SOUTH OF SANDUSKY .

TT

Right, because everything is going swimmingly in the City, I see.

Anonymous

I see a lot of immature, rude and just plain hateful words being written in these blogs. Stop badmouthing each other, as well as each others children and act like mature, responsible loving parents.

Anonymous

An even 100 comments on the sad saga called perkins.

TT

Again, we're still better off than Sandusky. No matter how bleak it looks here, Perkins residents always know to look north, and then our problems don't seem so great. At least we own our homes.

Anonymous

At least we HAVE a head coach that doesn't cuss out players and parents .He works hard in the summer and off season too.

Anonymous

it's easy folks, take after the buckeyes and schedule nothing but crappy teams all season, while the rest of the ranked teams play powerhorses week in, week out. In the end, you'll look great, while only needing to win one or two games a year (with a least one of those at home) for your title.

Anonymous

Maybe you guys could get Jay Crawford to come back and coach the team?

TT

I agree Notestine is tops, and that Brausch makes Farlow look like Dick Vermeuil, but one man doesn't equate with housing, does he? I wrote my comment in response to those who made it clear that they enjoyed Perkins' problems at large, reminding them that Sandusky's are far greater. Does the name Rectenwald ring a bell?

TT

That's "Vermeil."

Anonymous

u dont live in sandusky and i would appreciate it if you would just shut up and move on with your life i mean come on you are arguing on a football page for god's sake get a life

Anonymous

and perkins is not as great as Sanusky because they are a township not a city and they are jealous BURN!

TT

Jealous of what? Poverty? Crime? Schools? Good call.

Anonymous

Wow,
You people are still at it. Stop insulting each other. Grow up! Act your age.

Anonymous

If it bothers you, don't read it!

Anonymous

I cant wait UNTIL the schools merge because your sorry people cant support a school district . Then you will become one of us .

TT

So far, we're doing a better job than Sanduskians at supporting a school district. Ratings don't lie, and any Sandusky school teacher will tell you they'd like to have all the resources that Perkins teachers have. One of the reasons we can support a school district is that we own homes, we don't rent them. Have a pleasant day!

Anonymous

Wait until the STATE forces you to merge after you keep voting the levy down.I will be the first to welcome you to sandusky ,tt.

Common Sense

As for voting school levies down, how is it that Sandusky can dump their schools for a bargain price to low bids, yet they still need more money to run the schools.Your metro voters will pass your levy because they are in the majority and it won't bother them a bit. Hmmmm......

TT

Only in your dreams, RE. If anything, it'll be the thought of merging with that "high school" that will help to pass levies in Perkins, even if it takes a while. As for Perkins residents being jealous of Sanduskians, it seems that the most bitter winds blow from the north...

Anonymous

I'm glad THAT you are proud of your football program and how your coach HANDLES kids . I can SAY for sure that coach Franlkin doesn't cuss out his kids OR PARENTS. We may not win every game but most are proud of his efforts.I BELIEVE that is what this post is about not school levies .

TT

Apparently, chest-thumping pride eclipses literacy and comprehension as a priority in Sandusky. Where, re, did I say I was proud of what Brausch has done with the program? In fact, if you bother to read (assuming you can) down to my comment on Oct. 8th, 10 am, you'd know how I feel about Brausch. That's fine, if you're proud of the kids' efforts just because Franklin doesn't look at the win-loss columns. As for making this post about levies, I didn't start it, I just made sure everyone got their facts straight. Have a blessed (and long, I see) day!

Anonymous

We don't all own our homes in Perkins, and I consider it an insult that renters are judged so harshly, as if WE don't count! Cause I'll tell ya what, I know we pay a pretty penny in rent, enough so that taxes on our property are paid, along with our landlords! Not to mention that fact that our vote counts FOR THE SCHOOL LEVY as much as a homeowners'! Our rent goes up, right along with the taxes! We take just as much PRIDE in our home as if we owned! Not everyone is able to buy, or chooses to, for that matter! This site is about BELIEVING in each and every kid that's strapping on a helmet, shoulder pads, etc. on Friday night! WIN OR LOSE! We may not agree with every little thing, have differences of opinions, but when it comes down to it, WE ALL BETTER BE THERE FOR EACH AND EVERY YOUNG MAN ON THAT FIELD, AS WELL AS THE ONES NO LONGER ABLE TO TAKE THEIR POSITION ON THE FIELD! Good Luck Pirates! Believe in yourselves as well as each other!

TT

Ok, but since your rent falls short of the amount owners pay in property taxes, do you think you deserve an equal say just because you happen to live here? I know there are renters in Perkins, but unlike in Sandusky, they are in the minority here.

Anonymous

Wasn't Coach Bo fired because he wasn't winning enough games? Seems to me like he was doing just as good a job as the current Sandusky coaches at teaching life lessons to the young men of the program, and yet he still got fired. Go figure.

Anonymous

You sir, are classless! CONTRARY TO YOUR NARROW-MINDED, SOMEWHAT BIGOTED WAY OF THINKING, THEY DO DESERVE AN EQUAL SAY, THANK-YOU! By the way, JMO!

TT

Bigoted? Hardly. It follows that those with a greater financial stake in a vote deserve to get more for their vote. I live in Perkins, but you wouldn't want me to vote on a Sandusky issue, would you?

Wow

wow, all you people are clearly phsycotic. Perkins, Sandusky, and SMCC all are pathetic. Personally i hate it here, and can't wait to get back into a city where no one is inbread and all related to each other. It's sad that some people who live here haven't even experienced real life outside of this dump.

TT

"inBREAD?" Are you sure you're not?

TT

and "phsycotic?"

Sandusky is having a great season, huh? Aren't they 3-4? Well, I guess that a losing record is considered "great" in Sandusky.

puzzled

Lets see, may 18th to july 18th. thats 60 days to get things in order

perkins

McClung thinks you people are stupid.

Anonymous

How can you get something in order that supposedly isn't there to be put in order????

Anonymous

Yep, 60 days to get things in order and 60 days to get your story straight.

Anonymous

I don't recall ever hearing anything about the ATF coming to visit(???) Perkins in the newspaper, or anywhere else, until after the raid. Then Mr. McClung said that HE invited them. I guess this is something else that is none of the TAXPAYERS business. I wonder when the Register found out about it? Possibly, after the Morning Journal did yesterday?

Anonymous

the issue of "public impression" from the residents of the township, was based on the AMOUNT and TYPE of weapons, along with the cost of those weapons and the large amount of ammunition used to fire those weapons? I would certainly hope that McClung could produce those weapons in 60 days. That's like saying "Hey, we got a warrant for you, and we will be at your house at 6:00 on Tuesday to take you to jail". Kinda sounds foolish to me.

Anonymous

As a "public service," the Sandusky Register should publish a list of every weapon in inventory; make/model/caliber/serial number. Use the Freedom of Information Act to get it. NO SECRETS!

Anonymous

The ATF prioritizes just like any other profession. Obviously, they were not that concerned about McClung and Perkins PD.

Anonymous

Go to Google News and search for "BATFE" or "ATF"

Anonymous

Who cares what was in the Morning Urinal... you dont like what is on here then read the urinal and quit complaining. As for the "op" SHUT UP...You are an idiot. Who CARES about the information. The conceal carry list has been published, its done, its over with...get a life or a hobby or SOMETHING and MOVE ON!

Anonymous

Wonderful! I hope the PPD grants all CRIMINALS 60 days to prepare for a RAID!

Anonymous

Right back at you, MW: ""We do, however, have a strong stand against the state keeping secrets from those it governs... " The demand ... that the information be exempt from the public record means there are no checks on whether the program is being properly administered."" Okay, MW and SR, how do you know "the [weapons] program is being properly administered?" Do you even care? HA! It's too tough to pick on McClung--it's much easier to pick on CHL holders. Hypocrite!

Anonymous

I do and that's all it takes. My, you're easy to get flustered! (I like that!) Why is it that you clamor for "free speech" and fight tooth and nail for YOUR 1st amendment right, yet when someone (like me) disagrees with you, you want to deny them their right to express their opinion? You are a self-righteous, arrogant, hypocrite.

Anonymous

I do, and the 2,700 individual law-abiding CHL holders. And other individuals have cared about their rights, too: Linda Brown; Dred Scott; Homer Plessy; Rosa Parks; Medgar Evers; Frederick Douglass; and many others. Recognize those names? Would you have told them to "SHUT UP?" (Probably.)

Anonymous

Anyone else smell a rat?

Anonymous

Yeah, "she" would have told them, too, to "SHUT UP," "MOVE ON," and "get a life!" LOL!

Anonymous

While McClung may have TALKED to ATF on May 18th, I highly doubt that he INVITED them in. This has been in the works longer than 2 months.

Anonymous

This post was deleted because it contained information known to be false.

Anonymous

Ha ha....how insolent can a person become? I can't wait to hear more! I wonder if they called Tom Pascoe's Secretary too....Jack Daniels? He was probably "not available".

Anonymous

it is sad when the public had to break a story on the Registers website for them. I really hope they get rid of Westerhold before it gets any worse.

Anonymous

Well...somebody's heads gonna roll! It's not everyday that a branch of the Federal Government...the ATF no less...gets involved and walks away empty handed. Where there's smoke there's fire, and I'm pretty darn sure that they would not have made the trip unless it was neccessary! What has this Township come to?!

Anonymous

Petty, just petty Mr. Dwelle.

Anonymous

Word on the street is that McClung may have "invited" ATF after they first showed up and he went out the back door! When ATF showed up a second time Chief McClung would not allow them in and told them ATF they would need a warrant. I guess you can say he then "invited" them back.

Anonymous

Why would you say the Register got this story from the Journal yesterday morning? This story did not appear in the Journal at all.

Anonymous

Do you really think the ATF would come here because of one trustee? I think the ATF must have done some homework before contacting anyone in Perkins Twp. I'd be willing to wager they had been checking for months before anyone in Perkins Twp ever had a clue. And, I don't think they waste time doing inventories because some small time township constable asks them to. They have more serious thinks to take care of than try to cover McClungs butt for him.

Anonymous

finally something is being done to get to the heart of the problems with our P>D> the published article contains some untruths which is standard for the PD chief. this is only the beginning i am sure.

Hey take it easy, he thought about Mooney and the Big Red, but they were already taken. As for your lame humor we know the schedule is weak we have known that already, yes your right look out for Norwalk but that 2 weeks away.. This is prolly the first time the Truckers have opened up with a win in 15 years... Oh n look out for the Tigers!

Why not schedule danbury ?WHY NOT MIDVIEW OR EASTWOOD ? ROCK NEVER DODGED ANYONE !!!

ISN'T JACKSON JR.HIGH LOOKING FOR A GAME?

Anonymous

Rock never did stray away from a tough game thats one sane thing said on here. I would like to see some Region 10 teams on there and not the crappy one at the bottom. Jackon Jr better just stick to their schedule, we are still talking about a varsity squad that could see the like of 7-3 8-2

Joker

7-3 8-2 you kidding me in the sbc? They wont get by norwalk, nor, the big 3 in the sbc.You have to play the sbc you cant schedule cupcakes in the conference.

never talk trash about perkins...

they have owned you, bottom line

even if you win this year, you still must keep your mouth shut..

In the past 10 years, they have probably beat you on 40-6 on average

enough said

My thoughts

Perkins is playing a lot of Sophomores and building, in my opinion, for the next two years. Better win one this year truckers.

Anonymous

Is "Polar Bear" aware: 1)Don Wilson is the winningest football coach in the HISTORY of Margaretta? 2) Don Wilson is the most successful boys coach of any sport at Margaretta? (Measured by conference championships.) 3) Unless you people pass a levy, you don't have a prayer of hiring anybody who knows half the football of Don Wilson?

Anonymous

P.S. My advice is to support Don Wilson. I know the world of football coaches, and they're not vying for positon to take over Castalia High. He takes a bunch of undersized kids at the smallest public school in the league and makes them quite competitive as a team. Trust me, you can't and won't do any better.

Anonymous

great job panthers!

Anonymous

They are playing freshman too! I see where even the coaches son played !

cupcake

Bottom line is if they were PLAYING midview and eastwood they would be 0-2!Great move to GET duncan hines on your schedule!

Anonymous

How can they keep getting beat on the ends? Where's the adjustment?
No punt return team either.
NO DEFENSE + NO SPECIAL TEAMS = LOSES!!
I just hope these kids don't get blamed. It's obvious they are only following their assignments.
And why all the coaches on the sidelines when only 2 or 3 are making all the calls?

Anonymous

Hey...EL Da' Sheon Nix should come back and coach....better yet...come back and play!

Anonymous

Bottom line is... For some of you i think you need to actually go to the games and watch. They are young and they have about 9 seniors and 1 is out who was a top 3 player on the team as well. Linebackers who are obviously playing well is their 2-0, I think Norwalk will be a test but, Knuckles, Mcdowell, Bird, Finn, Priestas and anyone else in there will all get it done. The Secondary is my only question as far as this game goes. Lock down bird with Norwalk’s 1 and Bryant with their 2 and I think you u could contain them, maybe not stop but contain them, Perkins defense will be swarming Friday. I hope Norwalk wins for the sake that most of those seniors have seen significant playing time or were starters for 3 or 4 years. The maturity of the truckers is much better. Talent wise Norwalk has the pirates around the board in some area’s but the pirates also have talent that I think can step up and make it a game, remember we are talking about Norwalk.. Say what you will but just like every year when your a pirates football player you have that expectation of go out their and putting one on em.. Norwalk obviously has the upper hand, but we'll see around 10-10:30 Friday night what the final verdict is.

It has been nearly 17 years since the last time our football team has participated in the Ohio High School tournament. Once known as a powerhouse football program, is now the laughing stock of the state. Whose fault is it?

First and foremost I believe that our coaches, teachers and administrators (a.k.a. “The Money Makers”) need to be held accountable for the lack of success that our students are experiencing in both the classroom and on the field. Yes, it has been the coach’s fault for not preparing the kids to succeed on the field. Yes, it has been the coaches, teachers, and administrators fault for not being able to keep the more athletic / talented kids on the roster, whether it be through not assisting them more with their academics or not mentoring them in making the right decisions in life (which would eliminate most kids from getting in trouble).

Some people scream "it’s the parent fault that those kids aren’t in playing football because of their grades; it’s the parent fault that those kids aren’t in school because they got in trouble outside of school." Yes, to a certain extent the blame should be placed on the parents. However, what these people fail to realize is that in today’s society the successful teachers, coaches, and administrators are also mentors. Meaning, they mentor kids and show kids how to be successful in the classroom, on the playing fields, and in life! The kids who aren’t doing as well will receive more attention; will have their problems clearly identified; and will at least receive an opportunity to have his or her problems address. Therefore, as our student’s coach, teacher, and administrator or A.K.A. our student’s leaders or mentors, you should challenge your self to become more of a mentor to our kids and less of the traditional role of being a coach, teacher or administrator.

As a former alumnus/fan/supporter of Sandusky High School, I would like to see our kids succeed and thus, I leave by saying stop complaining and just “GETTER DONE!”

All i heard all summer was how good tinker is and THEY flushed him quick . Could it be no one on the pirate staff knows how to coach the spread ?

Anonymous

can anyone on that perkins team catch a ball? holy crap pirate receivers did your hands in molasses or something. or maybe brausch can drive his humdinger hummer to the forest and get some tree sap for them.

Anonymous

Moved here from N.Ridgeville-where I had 8 or 9 golf courses to choose from, came here and you have to drive a ways to get to a decent course-Thunderbird North is old school-(except for #12 lay-up on the drive?), the course drains well and plays steady scores all year.
Keys is a joke-Mills floods-Woussicket tricked up. The south course is soooo wide open you can just smash it and still wedge to any green. I can understand retiring and getting out of the business-then sell it and move on-why destroy what you have put 47 years worth of memories into. Let someone else-"the kid with the blog", take it on and make it his own. You haven't raised prices like the other clubs because you cater to the average duffer-you built awesome outting facilities for the companies to use-that's why I golf there-on the north.

Anonymous

Hmm not that, teaching a spread offense is not something you must be taught for many years to be able to run, its more of a question of the linemen they have protecting tinker. If tinker has no line which the pirate lack size and overal ability their i think you have a problem, in this case we do. Put the line of last year or 2 or 3 years ago and i think the pirates would have all day to throw.

From my experience it can be very stressful and intense when you are hosting and in charge of a cross country invite. There are so many things that can go wrong. When results begin to take a long time to produce things can be stressful knowing that coaches want results. It does not help to have parents, runners, and coaches breathing on the neck of the people working the meet. I do not think it is right that a coach and team has to leave a meet without results, but sometimes things are out of your control. I remember leaving Fremont this year without paper results, but they were emailed later on. I think that Chris Green results did take longer than normal, but we did finally get them. I did not mind because we were a team that did not have to travel a long distace to get home. As for Erie County, I think the meet was ran very well. Things were organized pretty well. If results seemed to take a while...get used to it. Very rarely will you get results right when you want them. Nice Job Perkins!

Perkins secondary is about as weak as it has ever been. Actually, its down right terrible and I would take back Bickell, Doster and them guys in a heart beat. The outside linebackers were no help either, so despite how well the d-line and inside backers play, Margaretta ran for 300 yards + to the outside. If I were coach Brausch I would spread my talent out and play lil birdman at outside linebacker. Unfortionately, he is very good finess coach who will not do this and continue to play a fast paced game with slow players.
