City doing bang-up job

Matt Westerhold
Mar 23, 2010

Wow. The five charter officers are doing a bang-up job for the city of Sandusky, according to the personnel evaluation forms recently completed by city commissioners. It's as if there was no housing scandal, no police department issues, no firefighters threatening to shoot the fire chief.

Everything is hunky dory in the city.

We asked commission president Dennis Murray Jr. whether the Nuessegate integrity probe launched by city manager Matt Kline and law director Don Icsman was covered in their reviews. "I'm sure the issues were on everybody's minds," our would-be state rep said.

On everyone's minds, Mr. Murray, but not one word mentioned in the performance evaluations. Thanks for sharing.

Commissioner Craig Stahl, who prides himself on a being fiscally responsible elected official, said he didn't think it was appropriate to include all the bad stuff because "those are still ongoing."

You got that right, Craig. The city already spent more than $50,000 on the Nuessegate debacle, and the current appeal process is likely going to cost another $100,000, with hired-gun attorneys from Cuyahoga County and retired Lorain County Common Pleas Judge Joseph Cirigliano getting the lion's share of that big take. And that's just the beginning.

You're doing a great job, too, Craig.

Well, Matt, did you think the commissioners were going to tell you the truth? All the more to recall these guys. Did you sign any of the recall petitions yet? The commission has us all so brainwashed so they think. They insult our intelligence. Shame of the commission for not sharing what needs to be improved upon. They get an "A" for covering everything up. The commissioners are about to get their evaluations with a recall petition and just in time.

He should have gotten an A for firing Nuesse! I applaud his guts for doing the right thing, even if it was not what Westerhold wanted.

I believe that the SR would be the LAST place I would go to tell ANYTHING. They have such a hard time being "truthful" when it comes to city issues and it's officials. Matt, you never cease to amaze me, I would definitely hope that you have something to back up that mouth of yours.

Anonymous

RECALL THEM ALL!!!

I know you only put out and "editorial" about once every 2 months or so and I know the only thing that you get any reaction on is the Nuesse thing, but I thought you were supposed to be some kind of profesional journalist Matt. Are you telling me that in ALL of Erie County there is nothing else that is of any interest to the citizens???? Nuesse is the one who caused all this by her actions and she got exactly what she deserved....so the money spent by the city is because of her the rest is just smoke and mirrors by her attorney. By the way, who is now footing the bill for her attorney? Are you helping out Matt? Is Baily doing this one for free, because he feels defending a has been two bit chief, is going to "put him on the map"? I feel sad for you Matt, it is time to go home, take down all your Nuesse posters and move on, itll be for your own good....this isnt healthy

It is truly amazing how everything returns to normal during an election period....all is quiet concerning the Nuesse saga and now all of the GOB evaluations are hunky dory....wow....all is well now that the MD project railroad is being built and the city will lose a prime piece of waterfront realestate that will be priceless to future generations.

All of the charter employees are in trouble and the city commissioners know it but it is not politically acceptable to have Murray on the carpet when up for election.

This whole MD and corrupt city commissioner behavior is repulsive.

Keep up the pressure Matt and have some courage to explore who is behind the MD development project....time for some real investigative reporting...before Murray hijacks the election playing like all is well under his watch.

CORRECTION: two-bit CITY commissioners and a two-bit commissioner president...

Sam

Lets talk about Westerholdgate and his bias, and using the Register as his personal forum for his slanted views. Bye, bye Kimmie & Mattie!

Anonymous

Let's not count your chickens before they are hatched. After this judgement comes down it will be HELLO Kim. She is not going to take anything but her reinstatement. She is not going to settle out of court unless this is part of the deal, as it should. It is not the SR or Matt who has slanted views on this it is the hateful anti Nuesse people who really do not know what has really happened. When all the depositions are in then you will know the real story and how they set her up to fail. It will be bye, bye, Sams and Frost to name a few.

Anonymous

You all keep saying she will win. And she continues to lose. She will not be back.

Anonymous

Just like your mammy, laying on her back making a quarter a whack.

SMOOCHY must go !

There will never be any change in Sandusky because nobody has the b*lls to step up to the plate and try to change anything. They would rather just sit behind the computers and whine like the bunch of babies that they are. I know that there would be quite a lot of work involved to make some changes, that is why you b*lless people won't do it.The city commissioners should be ashamed of themselves. Great job Matt and I hope Kim wins her appeal too

You say there's quite a lot work involved to make changes. So tell us how? I'm willing. I agree Matt's doing a great job and I hope Kim wins her appeal, too.

curious

Just out of curiosity---does Cuyahoga County ever use hired gun attorneys from Erie County for anything? Does Lorain County ever use retired Erie County Common Pleas Court judges?

For the Police Chief to pay for one of her employees DUI school and pay her employee 3 days pay while she is at DUI school "WITH OUR TAX DOLLARS" I am glad that Kline fired her. If he hadn't then when Susana got her DUI we would have had to pay her for the same thing. Nuesse set a precedent when she allowed that to happen. I have heard all these people Bi*ch, saying Kline approved it. THINK AGAIN PEOPLE! Nuesse was the top dog in charge and she says who gets what time off in her dept. NOT KLINE That is why the city employs adminisrators such as the Police Chief. Kline can not possibly be in charge of granting time off for all 500-600 employees for the city. He would never have time to get anything else done. If you bother reading the Murman report you will see the supporting documentation in the form of a memo to Kline from Nuesse telling Kline that she approved this action. You will also see that the request for the 3 days pay was not signed by Kline until after the DUI employee was already back to work from her DUI school. That is how big companies and government works. That is why they employ department heads, to take care of that stuff. TOO BAD Kline trusted Nuesse's word when she claimed that this time off was required by the city. I know that the majority of the commissioners DID NOT agree that that 3 days with pay for DUI school was required by city charter or any other rule. That is why they voted to retain the Murman report. Do you think that city tax dollars are well spent when Nuesse takes the area ministers to breakfast (the cheapest meal of the day) to the tune of $280+ dollars. Yes! We paid for that too!! No wonder the Ministers are behind her. Do you think she is buying breakfast on her own dime now?? NOT.............. I could go on but I won't. One last thing, Nuesse and K-RON want all of us to Sh*t can the Murman report, BUT... K-RON refers to the same report over and over again in his rebuttle to the city's attorneys. K-RON uses testimony from the same report as if it is true because it defends Nuesse. Now if the report is bogus......... why does K-RON use certain testimonies to her defense?? Makes you wanna say HHHMMM...

Matt...you have the questions.
You know who to ask.
You have their numbers.
You know how to contact them.
KEEP DOING IT MORE OFTEN!

Anonymous

You are such a cry baby. You never stop crying. Was it that good?

Anonymous

I would rather see my tax dollars go for a $280.00 breakfast for ministers than I would $150,000.00 of tax dollars going to SCUMBAG Cuyahoga County ATTORNEYS and a retired Lorain County JUDGE.

You all hate everyone. What a city. Perkins, Huron, Erie County and anyone else, stay away from Sandusky. The city of hate.

These posts are always shot down when they don't agree with Westerhold. If you quote facts you get slammed. Heaven forbid the SR get the facts and then actually print the facts. No wonder alot of people canceled the SR.
People want both sides reported equally and then they can make up their own minds about the issues.
The SR is so one sided in everything they report. Why don't you guys ever report any of the positive things that are going on in the city? Last weekend we had a wonderful Block Party on Hancock St. and not one reporter was on hand to report on it. Yes they were called and they were aware of the event. BUT as soon as the lady who organized the event had a problem with something that happened at the block party your SR reporter wanted an interview. Your paper thrives on gossip and half truths and that is not helpful to our community at all.

I personally am getting SICK AND TIRED of seeing my tax dollars going to these Cuyahoga attorneys and retired Lorain County Judges! What is the matter with ERIE COUNTY attorneys? At least they would have to pay back INTO Erie County the taxes on my WASTED tax dollars! What's with you unethical attorneys here in Erie County anyway with your CONFLICT OF INTEREST BULL? You took an OATH to do a job so get off your lazy behinds and DO IT! Any other profession you would have been FIRED by now. By the sounds of it the only jobs you DO take in this County are the jobs that are FURTHER ROBBING THE TAXPAYERS!

THE ICSMAN RULES!!

What? Iscman is your boss? So what's your job?

Who in the hell is SMOOCHY?????

Anonymous

keep up the good work, matt. i really look forward to reading the register now that there is some controversy that takes place. all the people that say to cancel their subscription must still be taking the paper so they can write nasty remarks.

Anonymous

More and more people are canceling the SR. They are tired of the biased reporting. And I have talked with SR employees who admit things are not good in the SR office. Keep canceling and hit them where it hurts, the wallet!

Anonymous

why do we have to include our name and email? sometimes people are afraid to ask legitimate questions or comment because it could come back to hurt them somewhere down the road with a payback from someone that will hold a grudge against that person. i know from personal experience to just keep your mouth shut, or pay a hefty price for expressing your opinion.
i'd like to know if these people from Cuyahoga County are in on all that corruption from all those elected officials you read about so much in the Morning Journal? Also, why did Don Icsman's step-daughter, Nichole Earnst, just get probation for all the nasty crap she has done and tried to do? Same reason all the "cookie cops" got a slap on the wrist for stealing from Girl Scouts of America! Don Icsman, that's why!
