For Baxter, truth is inconvenient

Matt Westerhold
Mar 23, 2010

Good Old Kevin Baxter can sure spin things away from truth whenever he wants, and a recent letter to the editor is a perfect example. Old Kevin made serious objection to a recent Register editorial critical of his office for issuing a flawed warrant that delayed the arrest of a child rapist.

The man was arrested "just 37 days" after an indictment was returned by a grand jury, Baxter says. I don't know about you, but even 37 days is too long for a child rapist to be free and on the loose. The man was accused in August 2006 and arrested by U.S. Marshals in late December that same year, so the actual delays were much longer than Baxter's spin. And local officials never lifted a finger to make an arrest after the flawed warrant was finally issued.

Baxter ignored repeated requests for documentation on the case and, when questioned directly about it on two seperate occasions, he stared back with a glassy-eyed look and feigned ignorance on the entire topic. How convenient. Play dumb when it serves you, Kevin, and then be filled with righteous indignation when you get called on your shortcomings.

Baxter also ignored written requests for the information, and for information on other flawed warrants that might have resulted in at least one other child rapist getting a free pass in Erie County. There are plenty of examples, but Baxter's abnormal need for secrecy keeps most under the radar.

And Baxter is quick to dump on his best buds whenever he gets put on the hot seat, including pointing the finger at the sheriff or deputies, or old best old bud county commissioner Tom Ferrell Jr. Kevin also will blame city officials for their shortcomings if that helps Kevin's cause. Kevin covers Kevin's butt -- and every other good old boy's behind -- as long as it serves Kevin.

It's time to cut the crap. You cannot fix a problem if you deny it exists, and when the sheriff's office has more than 800 outstanding warrants -- with serious felony crimes getting lost in bureaucracy -- there must be something wrong with the system.

If anyone is misrepresenting the facts, Kevin, it's you.

bye bye kimmie. make your best deal as things aren't going very well are they

Kevin Baxter and his do nothing brother-in-law, Bill Monaghan must go. Baxter protects the GOB's, and Monaghan is a total waste of the taxpayer's money. Let's re-call them both!

"It's a matter of interpretation." Don C. Icsman, Sandusky law director.

Please someone run against Baxter!!! Please for the good of this county, we need you to step up.

Until Matt westerhold is gone.

Anonymous

Did that a LOOOOOOOOOONG time ago. ;) So did all of my friends and family.

Thanks for canceling. We will continue to call for canceling until Westerhold is gone. He bet his career on Kim and lost. Time for him to pay with his job.

As far as serving warrants is concerned, it's not as easy as you may think. People, especially in Sandusky, move around a lot. It's not like bad guys file a change of address. Some people move a couple times a year. Then there are rules of evidence, policies and procedures that are designed to protect said bad guys' rights, 4th 5th and 14th ammendments (innocent until proven guilty right?) Not to mention law enforcement has to handle all the other problems in addition to serving warrants, like handling theft complaints, assaults domestics, unruly children, damage to property, and traffic crashes and enforcement.

Don't forget SMOOCHY! Just don't vote for them at the next election!

How I wish I could be as knowledgeable as Matt Westerhold. He seems to have all the answers to everything, but does nothing but sit behind his computer and blast those who have jobs that actually, oh I dunno....matter?? You walk into work, sit behind your desk and pass judgement on Prosecutors, Police, Government. I wish we could have worthless jobs with mindless drones who seem to hang on your every word. Do you honestly think that what you write matters to anyone????

Anonymous

If he is so great, why does he not run for office. If he got elected, he could actually try to do some of the bull that he writes about. Then we could second guess him all day.

Anonymous

YOU'VE FIGURED OUT EXACTLY HOW THIS COUNTY RUNS. CORRUPT JUDGES, FIXED CASES, SELECTIVE PROSECUTION, AND HELP FROM CHIEF JUSTICE MOYER WHO PULLS THE STRINGS. A VISIT FROM THE FEDS IS LONG OVERDUE. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!

Anonymous

I love your reporting style. There should be more like you keeping them straight. I'm not an expert, but you must be one of the best--at least I think so. These politicians are lucky that you don't spill what you really know about them.

THAT'S WHY DR.BAUMGARTNER IS LOCKED UP.

Anonymous

KEVIN HAS ALWAYS TRIED TO COVER UP THINGS LIKE THIS LAST TRIAL. HIS STAFF KNEW WHERE THIS SUBJECT WAS LOCATED AT AND DECIDED NOT TO INFORM THE SHERIFFS DEPT. THIS WAS HIS STAFF AND NOT THE SHERIFFS FAULT. MATT, CHECK INTO WHAT EVER HAPPENED AT SANDUSKY MUNICIPAL COURT WITH ASST. PROS. TERRY GRIFFIN CITATION WHEN LEAVING THE SCENE OF AN ACCIDENT. BET THAT GOT BURIED WITH KAUFMANN DOWN THERE. YOU WILL FIND THAT NOTHING HAPPEND WITH IT. WHEN THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED AT THE ERIE COUNTY OFFICES ON COLUMBUS AVE. SHE WAS SURELY WORKING DROPPING OFF PAPERS AT THE ERIE COUNTY BOARD OF ELECTIONS. sHE HAD THE ACCIDENT AND LEFT THE SCENE.A DEPUTY INVESTIGATED THE ACCIDENT WITH AN EYE WITNESS GIVING A STATEMENT.SHE WAS ISSUED A CITATION AND THE CITATION WAS FILED AT SANDUSKY MUNICIPAL COURT. HE COMES DOWN ON NUSSE ABOUT A NICKEL DIME PARKING TICKET, BUT THEN AGAIN INVESTIGATE HIS ASST. PROS. TERRY GRIFFIN WORKING AT THE TIME WHEN INVOLVED IN THE ACCIDENT.SHE LEFT THE SCENE AS WAS NOT PROSECUTED FOR THE OFFENSE.

IS GOOD AT ONE THING: MILKING THE COUNTY ON HIGH PROFILE CASES. HE FILES MOTION AFTER MOTION FOR $250 AN HOUR KNOWING THAT NOT ONE OF THE CORRUPT JUDGES WILL GRANT HIM HIS REQUEST. AND WHEN THEY DO, IT WAS A CUT AND DRIED DEAL MADE BEHIND CLOSED DOORS. NUESSE BEWARE. THIS BAILEY IS A CROOK LIKE BAXTER AND THE REST OF THE COUNTY THIEVES. GET RID OF HIM CHIEF KIM.

Anonymous

30 YEARS AGO BAILEY BEAT A CHARGE INVOLVING THE DEATH OF HIS WIFE'S CHILD FROM A PREVIOUS MARRIAGE. HE WAS FOUND "NOT GUILTY." HE'S GOOD AT SLIMING.

Anonymous

Bailey did not beat that charge 30 years ago!! He did time and proved it was not all it was thought. In Erie County 1+1=3 Per Baxter and the LAW! You have to prove it = 2 and HE DID !!! Stop picking on Bailey. Baxter, The Judges and Most of the SPD are as CROOKED as it gets in any county or state! The people need HONEST and CARING OFFICIALS like KIM!!

The truth is inconvenient? Well, I'll be the first to say that I am not a fan of any attorney, least of all Mr. Baxter. But I will say this, for Mr. Westerhold to make such a statement is like the Pot calling the Kettle Black. Truth and a "reporter" do not go hand in hand. Enough said.

I remember that hit skip ole Terry griffin was involved in. Another Erie County cover up with our law abiding county prosecutor staff

Can anyone tell me how a person who escapes from prison and goes on the run for over 25 years and when he finally decides he's older and wants to straighten up he turns himself in. Does he get charged for escape? NO! Sure he goes to prison to finish out his charges from before, but no new charges. Now tell me is that proper. So all know his name is Jack Caudill. Check the Ohio prison web site. More follows.

I think it's funny how people in this town immediately AVOID THE ISSUE and jump to Baxter's defense by ripping Matt. It takes all but 10 minutes to write a blog and I'm sure he has the capability to write it from home & not on "the paper's time". Regardless...it's an "in my opinion" feature anyway & part of the job.
Of course there is corruption. Continue being the true Sindudskians and sweep all the scams under the rug and "heaven forbid someone let the community know what's really going on"...how dare someone fill people in on the scams going on down there. The Pruitt/Fitzpatrick/Harrington case was a prime example-but the paper REALLY could have done a better job on that one. I think people around here are so used to corruption they wouldn't know how to function without it. Like living in Hazzard County. Yeehawww.

If you ever nail Baxter, I am going to give you a standing ovation as well as the whole city. Election after election, no one runs against him. Citizens of Sandusky, don't even give Baxter a courtesy vote come election time. Something is very wrong with this area when they can't get someone to run up against Baxter. Of course, when you think about it, it would have to be a republican candidate and republicans are business people that don't want to shake the tree for fear of what might fall out. When you have lived here year after year and see what goes on in this town, you simply wonder how things have been allowed to go on the way they have been. This little town of Sandusky is well controlled. I keep hoping that some day, the FBI will come into town and do a clean up.

NOW THIS IS ONE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF WHAT COMES OUT OF BAXTER'S OFFICE. SHE EPITOMIZES JUST WHAT THE LEGAL PROFESSION DOESN'T NEED. A NASTY BIG MOUTH QUACK WHO LOSES MORE CASES FOR THE COUNTY THAN SHE WINS. THEN AGAIN, IF YOU RAISE BAXTER'S SKIRT YOU MIGHT FIND OLE TERRY.

yummy

GET DOWN TO SANDUSKY MUNICIPAL COURT AND SEE WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THAT CITATION ISSUED TO TERRY G. FOR THAT HIT SKIP I'LL BET YOU IT WAS DISMISSED WITH NO PRE-TRIAL. BET THEY JUST PUT IT IN A DRAWER AND HID IT HOPING IT WOULD ALL GO AWAY!!!!

Rather ironic, when some bloggers some time ago, were questioning a Conspiracy Theory. Of course, they were just poo-pooed! Alot of controversy started some time ago when Eliz. Baumgartner began to speak-out about the goings on in Erie Cnty.. That was before Westerhold was here, right? Then there was the Fitzy Fiasco! I know I was personally appalled at how that was handled, as well the light sentence and little time actually served by a police officer (any officer) for RAPE! As well, look how they went about the firing of Chief Nuesse. Am hoping she'll get her job back, just like Officer Burns! Well, look where Liz is now. Did she make some mistakes to get herself put there, probably. However, I began awhile ago to believe there is more TRUTH to the "rantings of a mad-woman", than some would want us to believe, and that is exatley why she is where she is! By the way, don't know the woman personally, nor have I ever met her. If you've ever had to experience the whole Erie Cnty. Judicial System as well Juvenile, the laywers, some of the judges, the police dept., both Sandusky and Perkins, and their concept of a proper investigation that could lead to possible charges, you would all better understand! I speak from exp. going back at least 19yrs.! A lawyer from Cleveland, who specializes in Civil Rights told me (about 2yrs. ago), "You can't fight City Hall. My advice would be to move to a large city, like Columbus". My question, why can't we fight City Hall, espcecially if it's nothing but crap coming out of it?! To me, this is very, very SCAREY! To Mr. Westerhold and Mr. Phares, Truth and a Reporter, SHOULD ALWAYS GO HAND-IN-HAND

doesn't even work for the county any more. More reasons to not believe a GD thing you read on all these blogs.

Anonymous

Westerhold and the SR are catching on to what the old "Erie Voices" website reported a few years back.

Perhaps he will take over where Elsabeth Baumgartner & Bryan Dubois left off.

Baxter and company trying to silence the truth-sayers may be only temporary. We'll have to wait and see what happens.

The only thing I know for certain is that the truth will succeed in the long run.

If all of the dots are connected, you will see how Baxter, Erie County, Ottawa County's prosecutor Mulligan, the corruption in Cuyahoga County and of course Sandusky native Moyer are all connected in some way.

Baxter, Mulligan and others from Cuyahoga County were breathing a sigh of relief when they had Erie Voices shut down and sent Elsebeth to the Gulag as a political prisoner to silence her. But with the Feds investigating Cuyahoga and Matt putting the pressure on Baxter, I do believe that a lot of the GOBs will be exposed for what they really are.

Excellent job Matt. Keep the pressure up because I really do believe that you will become famous like Woodward and Bernstein in bringing the truth out. Of course once you do that, you can then go on as editor of a much larger newspaper and take on corruption in the state or even the nation.

Again, good job, Matt. You have built a following of supportors and also momentum.

All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.
