Police chief fought, won

Matt Westerhold

Kim Nuesse’s not the only police chief fighting gender bias. In Youngtown, Ariz., an arbitrator ordered police Chief Kimberly Johnson reinstated, dismissing complaints from her subordinates that she “created a hostile work environment.”

The Nov. 14 article in the Daily News-Sun detailing the developments did not say if Johnson was “super crazy,” but the whine from her officers had a familiar ring.

“She was really mean to us and made us work really hard,” the big burly Youngtown police officers said.

The similarities between the witch hunt targeting Sandusky police Chief Kimberly Nuesse and Youngtown's Kimberly Johnson are eerie, and disturbing. Some male police officers are just so delicate -- especially those “elite commanders.”

But there are stark contrasts. The city of Youngtown spent just over $12,000 on a review conducted by a human resources firm. The city of Sandusky has spent upwards of $200,000 on Nuessegate.

The firm hired by Youngtown did indeed find that a hostile work environment existed: The hostility was created by the complaining officers protecting their comfort zones.

If Kim were a man, we wouldn't be going through all of this. Baxter and the fat little policemen just couldn't stand seeing a woman at the top. Good luck Kim! We're all praying for justice!

I sure wouldn't waste my time arguing with babylicious. It is quite evident....she has no clue.

Why the hate? Has Chief Nuesse lied to any of you personally? Have you heard first hand any lies? Or, are you, like so many other people believing just what you read in the paper? I have known her for many years and find her to be a very upstanding person. So, unless you have been witness to any lies please keep your negative comments to yourselves. You people are the problem makers not Chief Nuesse.

Unfortunately, that's why the command staff and supervisors at SPD had to have witnesses every time the Queen was in the room spewing her crap. It caught up to her and is a travesty that everyone at SPD is getting lumped into this conspiracy. There are fine professional officer's, supervisors, and command staff at SPD that have the community in mind and try to make a difference. It isn't perfect, everyone isn't perfect there at all but there are some very fine officer's. To keep spewing and lumping all of SPD in the same boat is a bunch of crap. Kim Nuesse caused and created this mess, bottom line. The simple minded statements about her being a woman is ridiculous. Like previously stated, not everyone jumped on her bandwagon but an overwhelming majority did. The unhappiness fairy didn't care if she was respected, if you don't have respect, you can't lead, she didn't try to lead but pad her resume with Tim and Kim show and it didn't work. Sorry, goodbye!!!

You are sooo right! Kim Nuesse is a wonderful person, and a very good police chief. The hate comes from these people who don't know her, and believe only of what they heard. They have zero factual knowledge of the situation.

Anonymous

Excuse me, but, have you ever worked for this woman? Have you ever associated with her on anything other than a personal basis, or possibly some type of fund raiser? Did you even know her prior to this whole thing 'blowing up in our faces’? Kim was real good at playing the 'dress to impress' game. She could make you believe she could have run the FBI, but when it actually came to doing something she was all smoke and mirrors. As one of our wonderful commissioners stated, "Well she interviewed great!"
When someone is attempting to either impress you or to get you on 'their side' in a difficult situation, they are much different than when you work for them, or have to deal with them in a business setting. I'm not attempting to run her down, but even her sons' have an opinion that greatly differs from your "wonderful person" assessment. We at SPD do not "hate" Kim Nuesse, we just know her by her "fruits" and believe me, you would not have such a 'high opinion' of her if you were on our side of the produce isle.

Unbelievable. From an outsiders point of view (lived here about 6 years and can't wait to leave) this community is hypocritical, bias and for some reason that I have yet to figure out arrogant. This person was doing her job. All of you bigoted arrogant, self centered morons are simply jealous. I DO RESPECT HER AND HER POSITION. You "local yocals" really need to step back, take a look at your selves and workon your own character.

Anonymous

You have an option...if you don't like your job or the fact that your boss expects you to your job, leave. Go somewhere else. There are plenty of jobs for someone as smart as you are. Please, leave. Go ahead. Maybe your the reason the crime is so high in Sandusky. You are so worried about whats happening in your bosses office you can't see the crime you are paid to eliminate. Leave, go ahead. Do the community a favor and a service. Bye bye. Good luck. Farewell.

Ohhhh, you don't want to leave. You can't find another job...don't have any connections like you had here to help you get a position that you are not qualified for. Well you are stuck then. Do as your boss says and the public pays you for...protect and serve.

Since you can't figure out why this community is arrogant, I will assist you. It is because we are superior. You will not find a more advanced localized group of intelligentsia anywhere in the universe.

You are correct when you state this prson was doing her job. She was, however, doing much more that just her job and that is why she no longer has her job.

You mispelled "yokels".

I have stepped back and looked at my character per your request and I have found it to be flawless, but I thank you for the reminder.

When you leave you will miss us, but you will also be doing us a favor by raising our arrogance level merely by your abscence.

Anyone who can hear the accusations against Kim Nuesse and say she was "doing her job", are nuts!! It is obvious you have no idea about what the real issue and instead choose to go off of the fact that she is a woman and is being picked on by the "Good Ole' Boys". Everyone has a right to their own opinion, but when you give an opinion that is not based on the all the facts is an ignorant opinion. For you to hear of all the unethical things Kim Nuesse has done and still continue to feel she should be leading a Police Department, I mean how can you REALLY feel that way and not understand why people feel you're stupid. A police man in Huron takes a pill to help his blood pressure so his insurance wont be affected and all you Dotes wanted him run out of town..BUT the key word in that senetence is "HIM"...there are women out there who are having children by 3-4 different guys as a career so they can get everything for free INCLUDING health insurance, but this guy wanted to not pay astronomical prices for his health insurance, cause he is trying to work AND raise a family and you people call him a crook??? Make up your minds people, you can not make this decision about a person's sex. You are all just a bunch of hypocrites and Matt Westerhold is the king/queen of you all!!

We now have Det.Sgt.Orzech incharge of his brotherinlaw Det.Nixon working together in the DB how did this happen. We know Sams is
behind this, Nixon is no detective, again
this is the buddy system at SPD bring back
Chief Nuesse.

Anonymous

I have heard the accusations against Kim Nuesse. What you haven't bothered to hear is the proof that the accusations are false. She didn't pay a parking ticket that is fact. She offered to pay it twice but took the terrible advice of the then command staff to not pay because they viewed the ticket as unwarranted. Everyone from the judge to the City Manager were aware of the decision. A year later a new City Manager decides to reach back and call the decision dishonest. Go figure!! The rest of the allegations are similar bluster, smoke & mirrors.

Locate Isolate and eliminate. You have no honor and this story will be told.

Anonymous

Nixon was put in the detective bureau under Chief Nuesse's watch. Of course you don't know that and aren't you the one who told Nuesse not to pay her ticket?

Anonymous

It's not Kim's fault she didn't pay her ticket. An employee told her not to. Bad judgment on her part and another reason to let her go. She WAS the boss and it was her responsibility to pay it. Not to blame others when she didn't. Only the judge can dismiss a ticket, if he didn't dismiss it, then she had to pay it.

I suppose it's not her fault she lied either. If her boss didn't ask her a question, then she would not have had to lie. That makes it Matt's fault for putting her in a position to lie. I see how this works, it's never Kim's fault, it's always someone else's fault.

Anonymous

Why should anyone that was not the initiator of the problem leave? No officers asked her to lie, none of them encouraged her to fabricate issues about the dispatch system, and no one twisted her arm to associate with Timmy
From your proposal that type of reasoning indicates that if your boss is a lying, thieving, child molesting, rapist, you should just 'go find another job'. You are part of the reasoning this society is in the trouble it’s in. You are the type of person that refuses to stand up to what is wrong in society. I imagine that if you had witnessed a crime and I asked you for a description of the perpetrator, you would reply, "I just don't want to get involved". And yet you are ready to crucify someone who does, and would call them a "snitch". But if it makes YOU feel better, go ahead and cast your stones, you won't be the first, and definitely won’t be the last. If I had a dollar for every time somebody told me they were going to kill me for doing my job I'd be a wealthy man. They only difference is you have the gall to accuse me of not doing it.

Anonymous

he or she is right. leave if your unhappy or can't do the job! there are plenty of good people looking for work. Leave the chief to do her job. How can she do it with all of you gnats pestering her?

Anonymous

She can't do her job, she IS FIRED, WAS FIRED and will REMAIN FIRED.

Anonymous

I heard SPD was having a departmental meeting when Frankowski is no longer alive and P*ss on his grave.

Anonymous

You apparently either can't read or are just plain thick in the head. I never said I was unhappy, or can't do the job. If it made any difference you could look at my file anytime you want. The Chief and her attorney have and had nothing to say to me about it during my testimony.
Once again I tell you it’s the issue of right and wrong. What Ms. Nuesse did was not right. As a supervisor and Chief of Police she has a responsibility to be above reproach in her conduct and her actions. Not only should the public be able to expect this from her, but her officers need to be able to look up to her. If she is unable or unwilling to conduct herself in such a manner, she is the one that needs to leave, not the officers that do the job day in and day out without your thanks or anyone else's. Whoever you are, I'm done talking to you because you obviously are incapable of understanding the simple concepts of right and wrong. Have a great day.

Ha! Ha! Matt, you sure know how to light the fuse. Of course all the SPD supporters AND their spouses are going to scream you are a bum. I want to be informed and FREE to make my own decisions. I need the SR to keep reporting this. The people will decide if this story in AZ has any significance to Sandusky, Ohio. It IS news because this involves taxpayer MONEY. This is all about a wrongful discharge by the city and how much she is going to get. I have seen this before where subordinates create a mutiny and get upset when the media exposes everything to the public. Of course Nuesse is going to be controversal. It was an abrasive relationship from the beginning. I am still undecided as what is best for SPD. I know these SPD boys and girls and most of them are credible. A few are not. Many have left or retired. I do know she will win and get paid, but she needs to resign once reinstated. This will be the best for everyone involved. The FOP knows that in order to issue the death penalty of labor (termination) your case must be extremely strong. We shall see. I hate to see so much money wasted when the city and the PEOPLE are going through hard times.

Anonymous

Why should we pay someone for doing what is wrong? And with regard to the FOP-She, as a chief, is not a member of the FOP bargining unit. She gave up that right when she took on the position that she did. As a department head, all the City Manager had to do was to tell her she was not working out in his administration, and leave her go. This is true of ALL department heads. They do not even have to give you a reason. In my opinion, his decision to enter into this issue of her subordinates complaints was a HUGE mistake. It opened the door to all this "he said/she said" controversy, as well as her playing the "gender card". Well, we will see how all this plays out-I hope for the best.

The Fraternal Order of Police is a brotherhood and sisterhood of law enforcement officer's who care for each other and the communities they represent. The ex-Chief wasn't associated because she didn't care about anyone but herself. If you idiots on here don't like the police, quit calling.

Taxpayer

The chief of police or any department head for the city are hired at WILL. But, if the city manager fires someone, it MUST be for just cause. It is like when the labor union fights for the job of one of its members. If management's case is weak, the member will be reinstated with back pay. Nuesse was fired and now a judge has to decide if she was fired for just cause. It is the same principle. In order for the death penalty of employment be justified, there must be overwhelming justification. If the city (employer) case is weak then Nuesse (employee) will be reinstated. Come on! You know of people that have been arrested and still be allowed to keep their jobs. The department needs this to end so they can get back to serving the public and promoting lieutenants to captains and sergeants to lieutenants. The problem is the members of the department initiated this thing so it will play out to the end. I also hope for the best because the police department has a ton of other things they need to do (like being involved in selecting a new chief) besides being in the spotlight for a department head termination dispute.

Hi Lori

Attitude

That is what ALL this is about. Go anywhere - watch what happens when attitudes get in the way of logic. Problems. If the problems aren't resolved, things usually snowball. It happened here.

I was uptown one night when the FOP were having some kind of party and
it was disgusting the way these officers were acting and carrying
on at their upstairs lodge.

@ BILL

Sounds to me like maybe they were having a good time? Unlike the Nuesse supporters who spend their life blogging trying to make her look good.
