BLOG: First Obama to Sandusky, then Jepsen to Cedar Point

Just two days after President Barack Obama’s stop on Ohio’s North Coast, Sandusky will be visited by another person of celebrity status. Granted, she’s nowhere near as important a figure in shaping our world, but she probably carries a tune better than the president does. (No offense, Sir.)

Carly Rae Jepsen will bring her 26-year-old voice and hit song “Call Me Maybe” to Cedar Point’s Celebration Plaza at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 7. Dance crews will compete from 5 to 7 p.m., and the nightly Luminosity show will begin at 9:15 p.m.

All passholders and guests with park admission tickets can attend the performances.

Now, I could care less about this event from a personal perspective, except to say it’s a good thing for Cedar Point and Sandusky.

Jepsen will perform at the park while boasting the No. 1 song in the country on the Billboard Top 100 and Digital Songs lists. That’s a feather in Cedar Point’s, um, beach cap.

The former “Canadian Idol” contestant’s hit song is alienating in that it’s very catchy but has caught on so much that there’s backlash because some people are sick of hearing it. (Exhibit A: The collective groan a couple weeks ago from guests when the song was played in the Millennium Force queue.)

Even park employees — and Snoopy — are hooked on the song, as this page shows: www.cedarpoint.com/blog-article/online-fun/Behind-the-Scenes-Cedar-Point-Call-Me-Maybe-Lip-Dub

To be fair, I heard the song only once Thursday while wandering around the park. I thought it was going to be nonstop leading into Saturday.

Many outlets have proclaimed the tune to be the “song of the summer” for 2012. I can’t imagine a better place for a song of the summer to find a temporary home than Cedar Point.

At the same time, considering I grew up on the likes of Led Zeppelin and AC/DC, any artist who utters the words, “I want to do Justin (Bieber) proud,” has lost me.

Considering Celebration Plaza isn’t exactly a huge concert venue, I’m most curious to hear if it becomes like Obama’s visit in one particular way: With a lot of people unhappy they didn’t really get to see much.

Hopefully it’s a great show for all those who attend.

As for me, I’ll be working Saturday night, so someone will have to let me know how it goes. Or not.

Inform Me Maybe.

“QUICK POINTS” FROM THURSDAY, JULY 5

Overheard at the Park

"That's cool!" From a boy, probably about 7 or 8, outside of a bathroom, where his dad was trying to explain how automatic-flush toilets do their thing.

The Good

Finally got around to my first ride of the year on Space Spiral, for nostalgia’s sake. In light of its suspected demise, it probably was my last ride on it. It’s an important piece of Cedar Point’s history, but its time has definitely come.

The Bad

I typically don’t ride the water rides, but a lot of guests were unhappy that two of them — Snake River Falls and Shoot the Rapids — weren’t running while the oppressive heat still was hanging around. After about a 20-minute wait, WindSeeker went down because of high winds at the top of the tower. It’s a decent ride, but its name frustrates me. Still, I certainly appreciate the park’s safety measures and concerns

The Indifferent (just observations — not good or bad — about the day)

There were more guests in the park than I would have guessed before arriving, considering I assumed there would be a big push by locals to see President Obama. But considering only about 300 people could get tickets to the ice cream social, I guess that makes sense.

Good 2 B Me

Dude, that is just plain creepy that you are quoting little boys from in the bathroom. Sorry, but that is a bit odd.

Tom Sherer

Nice. Rest assured, it was a discussion between the boy and his father OUTSIDE the bathroom, as restated above.

The difference between Obama's appearance and that of Jepson is that more than a privileged few lawyers, union hacks, and wealthy democrat benefactors will be able to see Jepson.  Heck, even good 2 be me will probably show up in his skirt and heels. LOL

Taxed Enough Already

is this rag of a paper going to interject Obama in every story from now 'tl election day with every visitor that comes to Sandusky.  GET OVER IT, he came he lied, he left.....typical politician.

now let's see how long it takes for the register to delete my previous post.  They are good at that when the comment does not agree with their consensus.

Obama's Sandusky "Dog & Pony Show" is going to be one of those things that the city of Sandusky will talk about for a long time...sadly(the president stopped here once...I didn't get to see him because I didn't contribute 10,000 Dollars but I saw him in the paper)

It would have been more exciting if it had been an actually rally and not a photo op to show that Obama "cares" about the middle class(yeah right).

It is actually more exciting that Carly Rae is coming to Cedar Point because you don't have to kiss a** to see her show(or be involved with the Democratic Party, UAW, NAACP or with the Disengenuous City Leaders of Sandusky)-you just have to pay for CP admission and get there early enough to find a good seat.  Plus, I know without a doubt that she will be more exciting that Obama.

Julie R

Did you ever hear Obama carry a tune? He's pretty darn good and might be just as good! Who knows, he might even be better. Just sayin'.  :-)

friend

Really Julie R?  Really?  I s'pose he can hang with Kim Yung Il on the golf course too, hitting a hole-in-one on every hole.  How'd the Kool-Aid taste?

Nor'easter

At least the taxpayers didn't get stuck with a bill for security for another political fundraiser.  BTW When is the Democratic Committee going to reimburse the taxpayers for the improper expenditure of public funds for a private event.  WE WANT A REFUND!!

At least she is more popular than Obozo!

Even CNN said Obama's tour these last few days is well staged and a dog and pony show to get votes for reelection. He doesn't give one hoot abou tthis area - he just knows he needs votes.

The Big Dog's back

Once again I will say a sitting President hasn't visited the area for 64 years. Any wonder?

Morningbreezes1

I agree with Julie on this one!  LOL  He's pretty good at carrying a tune!!!

friend

Maybe JulieR and Morningbreezes are right?!?!?
