BLOG: Cedar Point offers new Bonus Ride Time program for passholders

If you really need another reason to push you over the top in buying a Season Pass or Platinum Pass, this might be it.

Cedar Point is allowing all passholders 30 minutes of Bonus Ride Time on Millennium Force or Top Thrill Dragster after the park closes Tuesdays and Wednesdays through Aug. 15. The only exception is the week of July 2, when the bonus nights are Monday and Tuesday.

The program starts this week and complements the already-scheduled hour-long Ride Nights for people with a Platinum Pass. (Two hour-long Platinum Pass Ride Nights are scheduled for Millennium Force, Top Thrill Dragster and Maverick — six nights total — but the first nights for Millennium Force and Top Thrill Dragster have already happened.)

Millennium Force is up first in the 30-minute all-passholders offerings Tuesday night, followed by Top Thrill Dragster on Wednesday night. The order alternates each week through Aug. 15. For example, Top Thrill Dragster will be June 19 and Millennium Force will be June 20, then Millennium on June 26 and Top Thrill on June 27, and so on.

As with the 60-minute Platinum Pass Ride Nights, Bonus Ride Time will begin after the ride’s regular line runs out. And the events are subject to change because of weather conditions or maintenance issues.

For those who don't know, keep in mind there’s a difference between a Season Pass and a Platinum Pass. Just make sure you know what you’re buying — if you’re buying — before you don’t get the perks you’re expecting.

It’s cliche, but I would now agree with the saying it’s worth buying a Platinum Pass if you can make it to the park at least three times. Every visit after that is a bonus.

The “free” parking (otherwise a minimum of $12 per visit), the early entry (one hour before the general public every day) and the expanding extra ride time offerings make a Platinum Pass worth it — if your schedule allows you to take advantage of the extra time. Everything else you get — small food/merchandise/activities discounts and “free” parking and admittance to other Cedar Fair parks, including Soak City — is just gravy.

See you in the park.

Overheard at the Park

“Is this heaven?” Boy, maybe about 10, during Top Thrill Dragster Ride Night.

The Good

For the first time I can remember, I literally walked right onto a Top Thrill Dragster train — twice.

The Bad

You know the smell of bugs burning on a halogen lamp’s bulb? With the mayflies and muffleheads committing mass suicide in the new Luminosity lights along the main midway, that was the exact smell during my walk out of the park at about 11:30 p.m.

local man

Free admission to soak city, regular pass does not include it.

And remember Platinum pass holders...There's also food discounts..I bought a chili cheese fries and got a regular order of fries and 2 16oz drinks free...Yes..chili cheese fries are 7 bucks..but 7 bucks for 2 fries and 2 drinks isn't bad IF you are planning to eat there, anyway.

The food deals are cool, but the 30 min. extra ride time? Meh.  Since they allow regular parkgoers to get in line for the top rides, right up until closing time, you would have to wait 30-45-60 minutes until after park closing for the 30 minutes to start. Basically, it just allows you to wait in long lines, but just for an hour or so later in the evening. For the effort, you'd probably be lucky to ride Dragster once, but who knows, on Tuesday and Wednesdays, maybe not as many people will take advantage of it, and it might even be a worthwhile/useable perk.

A far more valuable perk to we season passholders is early entry. My wife and I arrive at 9am and ride all of the big rides before 11am, then head over to Soak City. Unfortunately, CP also allows early entry to hotel guests, so that isn't quite the perk it used to be.

The biggest issue is that with the new FastPass, those of us who don't pay for that, suddenly face much longer lines for some rides, such as Dragster. So, the value of OUR season pass isn't what it used to be. Of course, those who pay for the Fast Pass aren't really getting an awesome value either, since about 15 of the 20 rides that use FastPass don't have long lines, even on sunny weekends.
