The Problem: City Employees Don't Even Understand Their Purpose

Question:  What  is the purpose of city government?

Answer:  To provide basic services with tax dollars collected from citizens who live there.  These basic services are:

Basic police and fire services, water & sewer service, road and sidewalk upkeep.

City government does not exist to "provide jobs" for the people who currently provide these services.  The jobs to carry out these services only exist because the taxpayer funds are there to pay for them.

Attention all police and firefighters in Sandusky:  SANDUSKY RESIDENTS DO NOT WORK FOR YOU.  YOU WORK FOR THE RESIDENTS.

Attention Matt Kline:  YOU'RE JOB IS TO MANAGE THE BASIC CITY SERVICES IN SANDUSKY AND IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO PAY THE PUBLIC SERVANTS WHO WORK FOR THE CITY, YOU MUST RESTRUCTURE, STREAMLINE OR ELIMINATE THE POSITIONS.

Take a look at  these inane comments from an SR reader:

Montego Bay articulates the mindset of the people who depend on the city coffers.  This commenter admits to having acquaintances within the police department and again we're exposed to the shrill emotion driven rhetoric of PD supporters (or the officers themselves) who don't understand their purpose.  That somebody thought it wise to share this in public is stunning.

Look at the quote in red:

Well pal, once you've dealt with the "waste" (so you admit that you were wasting city tax dollars before the budget crunch?) you should move onto the "unecessary."

Suggestion:  Eliminate any and all "economic development" positions within the city.

It just seems to me that Matt Kline and the commisioners have tried

for as long as they could to keep as many of employees on the payroll

as possible so sandusky residents could enjoy the services they have been

accustomed to.But as everyone knows our economy has not gotten any better

and it has been a tough time for everyone. Alot of people have lost their jobs

and the city's income has fallen because of it.The time has come for management

to make the decision to either cut a few services and/or employees now rather

than a massive cut of them in the future.I for one do not wish for anyone to lose their

jobs but I don't think that the City has a choice at this time.
