Jan. 12: Tough day. Spent the day cleaning snow from cars and moving cars everywhere - great exercise, but the boss bought Pizza Hut pasta and breadsticks for everyone for lunch - couldn't resist. I only had one breadstick and a couple of spoons of the pasta. It tasted good, but I felt guilty. I did OK in the evening. I work out with Trevor tomorrow night. I bought an exercise ball and will begin some exercises tomorrow night at home.
Jan. 13: Work was fine. It is tough getting up earlier to make breakfast - I didn't get up in time today. I did pretty well at work with fruit, shake, bars and some POWERade Zero. I was an official at a swim meet and then right to the gym to work out with Trevor. Did a leg workout combined with sparring and core work, both on the ball and on the floor. Trevor increased the weights, so the second set of each was tougher than last time. The sparring really brought out the sweat and got the heart pumping. Trevor constantly varies the combinations of punches during the sparring - it takes some real concentration and thinking to get it right and by having to really focus on the punches helps the heart rate go higher. High protein shake, fruit and chicken after workout. Lots of comments at work and at the swim meet about the article in the paper - even one of my old swimmers who lives in North Dakota read about it and sent a message. I have another workout with Trevor tomorrow. We are fitting workouts around my swim officiating schedule. I have four meets this week.
Jan. 14: Tough day at work. I didn't get things planned or organized the night before so was on shakes, bars and fruit most of the day, even had some water. Workout with Trevor was a chest workout with step box/medicine ball work between sets. This was fairly tough and had me really puffing when we were so finished - core work was tough, but more because I was so tired from the other parts of the workout. We weighed and measured tonight - I have lost another 5 pounds for a total of 20 pounds. I will leave the measurements for the monthly weigh/measure report, but I was pretty pleased with the total but lost inches in different locations than I thought I would.
Jan. 15: Eating to day was just OK. No workout as I was supposed to have a swim meet. I went home to change and go to the meet and found out it was cancelled so had to get redressed and go back to work. My wife picked up our 4-year-old grandson today for six days. He is a great little kid but I have a feeling the eating will be tough for me while he is here.
Jan. 16: I was right. When I got home from work the two of them had planned for us to make pizzas. I helped make them and did partake - the only plus was I ate a lot less than I normally would have. Pizza is one of my favorite foods and how could I say no to a 4-year-old?
Jan. 17: The swim meet was from 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. The host schools for all-day meets usually have a nice spread for coaches and officials, and this was no exception. I was able to stay away from the doughnuts and ate a couple of oranges and drank flavored water before the meet began. I also had a couple of shredded chicken and sloppy-Joe at the break with flavored water so thought I did pretty well for the day. Got home to find that dinner was planned at Wendy's so I did have a burger and small fries and I drank diet soda.
Jan. 18: I got up and went out and did 60 minutes of walking outside in the cold. Did some snow shoveling when I got home. After a great start to the day, it went downhill. I have had carb cravings for several days, and at the request of my grandson, I made pancakes for breakfast. I have always been the breakfast cook in the family, and the kids and grandkids have come to expect me to cook breakfast when they are around. We went to the movies in the afternoon - saw "Hotel for Dogs," and Brandon loved it. I was able to stay away from the popcorn. I took a couple of oranges and ate those. I had some fruit and a bagel in the evening. I will get back with the real program tomorrow. I am a little bummed with my performance this week. I am beginning to work with a friend who is into nutrition, Lisa Smith, and we are trying to come up with something a little different to help keep me on track. Lisa is a distributor for USANA products. I have used their shakes and bars before and will be trying some of the new products. The diet will be aimed at achieving a balanced glycemic index - trying to eliminate the spikes that cause the cravings for carbs and sugars! I will be keeping you posted on how this works on my cravings.
On a general note - I have received a lot of comments and support resulting from last week's initial issue of FIT. Friends have called and e-mailed. Parents of area swimmers have approached me with supportive comments - one person even said they had entered the contest. Many have asked me what I am doing and how I am doing. I really appreciate the positive reinforcement. I do not however understand some of the comments on the blog. I understand some people are skeptics; some are jealous because they aren't trying to do anything to help themselves. I do not understand some of the downright mean statements about Kristin and me. I am a firm believer in the old adage of "Do unto others as you would have done to you." I am sorry that you have been treated so poorly but it wasn't me. Some of you give me reason to support censorship.
