The FIT Challenge is quickly coming to an end with the final weigh-in Jan. 4. I believe we still have a race and it is too close to call as all three contestants are doing well.

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and enjoyed the time with family and friends. I am looking forward to the New Year and can't believe how fast this year has flown by.

When I look back to the start of the FIT Challenge I see a far different person - one with failing health and a weight problem that I wasn't addressing. I now see the new Gary with my health coming under control and my weight closer to where it should be to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle.

When we all look to the New Year and consider New Year's resolutions, make the choice of improving your health. Just remember that this journey is a marathon and not a sprint.

I know I have just started and have a long way to go on my journey to better health. Slow and steady wins the race. I have much to be thankful for this year having been involved in the FIT Challenge and appreciate the Sandusky Register for the FIT Magazine and Brandi Barhite for doing such a wonderful job as the FIT editor.

I appreciate Derek Nimrichter of Bodi and Balance for volunteering his time to push me to where I am today. Derek has given me the tools I need to go forward. The remainder of my journey is now up to me. I would also like to recognize the staff at Bodi N Balance who have been very supportive and the owner Trevor Tieche for his commitment to the FIT Challenge.

Finally, I would like thank my wife, family, friends and others who have watched and supported me in my journey this past year.

This past week has gone well. I worked with Derek on Dec. 20 and Dec. 24. We continue to push to my goal of losing 80 pounds. I can see the goal, just not sure I can reach it by Jan. 4. However, I will continue on well after the competition is complete.

I want to look back at this year as only the beginning of better heath and prove to myself and others that I have the drive to continue to improve my health. I wish everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year.

Good Luck on your journey!
