BLOG: Abortion Is A Dirty Word

Bryan Dubois
Sep 16, 2010

The mere mention of the word is controversial - even though supporting the right to abortion is a tenet of the modern day Democratic party.

Debate any abortion supporter and they'll object to your use of the phrase 'pro-abortion' to describe their position. They'll claim that using the phrase in unfair and inaccurate because nobody wants abortions.  Nobody likes abortion.  The existence of such a grisly, barbaric act exists to the dismay of all, you see.  Democrats simply believe that a woman should have the right to choose whether or not to have an abortion.

So if you oppose abortion, don't bother demonizing those who don't.  All people recognize the inhuman nature of terminating a child's life because of the inconvenience the child may introduce into the parent's life.  Yes, the majority of abortions in this country fall under this category.

So don't bother.  You couldn't possibly demonize a concept that most people feel uncomfortable talking about already.  What you should do is continue pointing out the reality of abortion.  Abortion can only exist if supporters don't have to face the reality of abortion.

For example:  How many supporters of abortion would be willing to describe to you - during a debate - the detailed procedure of a D & X abortion?  (aka dilation & extraction, partial-birth abortion).  If any of them even know the details of the procedure, I'd bet money that they'd decline to explain it to you.

Common sense says, I'm not going to explain the procedure because I'd sound like a monster for supporting it.  Can we just describe it as a 'medical procedure?'

Opposers should concede that the act is a "medical procedure" by responding with a poster of an aborted child with the Hippocratic oath posted beneath it.

"...never do harm to anyone."

Let common sense do the arguing.

You might as well agree with them that abortion is wrong and that nobody likes it - and then simply point out that on such a divisive issue there are two groups of people:

Those who disagree with abortion because it's inhuman and wrong, and those who disagree with abortion because it's inhuman and wrong - but are quite willing to tolerate it.

What's in a name?

The makers of high fructose corn syrup have abandoned the idea of doing a name-saving campaign.

Once a word has become so reviled, you can't even mention it without turning people off.

stormy, go back to beating your dog.

stormy

My dog is a rescue; a gentle, loving creature who filled a big empty spot in my soul.  I never beat him.   And I'm generally not violent toward other humans; maybe I'll get back to that later.

Brutus, it's gratuitous, groundless and stupid insults, like the one you just posted, which deprive you and your clique of any credibility on here.

I'm going to ignore chung and brutus for a moment, and address this to anyone else who has been reading these comments.  Those two wouldn't believe what I'm about to write anyway.

I took a nap during lunch today, and had a nightmare; one that I've had many times.  When I awoke, I spent some time reflecting on things, including my war of words with chung.  I'm deeply ashamed that I allowed some faceless dweeb to provoke me to the point where I was actually willing to fight.  I'm not violent; the closest I come to violent conduct is yelling "HIT HIM" during a football game.

The truth of the matter is that I hate violence, and with good reason; violence turned my life upside-down.  Any of you nice folks know what it feels like to take a life?  I do, and I'd give anything to forget that feeling.  I was only 19; I was taking the daily receipts from my father's shop to the bank when a guy tried to rob me, and I wouldn't give him the money.  Had he been pointing his gun (a big .45 semi-auto) straight at me, I probably would've handed it over, but he was pointing it at the ground between us, and he looked just as scared as I was.  And I had this crazy, STUPID idea that I had to defend my Dad's money, so I pulled my own gun out of my coat pocket.  The other fellow actually managed to pull the trigger first, but he'd forgotten to chamber a round, and I shot him dead over a lousy fifteen hundred bucks.

The other guy lived for a minute or two.  Ever see a man die of multiple gunshot wounds?  You don't want to; it's horrible.  I actually tried to help the guy.  He was coughing blood, gasping, wheezing.  His last words were:  "Man, I...I have a kid."  Why did he say that?  Was he trying to explain his actions?  Was he robbing me to feed his kid?  Was he trying to make me feel guilty?  Well, it worked.  I was cleared of any wrongdoing, but I've never forgiven myself.  I should've handed over the deposit bag.  I still relive those moments in my dreams at least a couple of dozen times a year, and always wake up in a cold sweat.  And yes, I still wonder about that guy's kid.  Maybe that's why I never married, never had kids of my own.

Please don't advise me to go to counseling; been there, done that.  I just have to live with what I did.

It took 29 years for someone to push me to the point where I'd be willing to raise a fist in anger.  Hope you're proud of yourself, chung.  From now on, you may hurl as many insults at me as you like, but you won't get under my skin again.

Bryan Dubois

Stormy, I hope you find peace - no matter what issues you've had to deal with.

 Back on track....

Psalm 139:16 (NIV)

"Your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be."

stormy

The odds of my finding peace are pretty long.  All I know is that my experience gave me a rather unique perspective on the sanctity of life, and I won't stop defending it.  Neither will I let anyone incite me to violence, ever again.

Clearly it was Chung Lee's fault that Stormy threatened violence?  Sounds like the typical type of personal accountablity that Republicans are famous for.  Maybe stormy should listen to less hate radio?

 Via Chung Lee:

"Unfortunately the conservatives only seem to have opinions and emotions (particularly anger)."

For a guy who has worn out the "Moderators have removed this comment because it contained personal attacks" button that's a pretty cheeky statement to make.

stormy

To she who named herself after a douche:  Just how dense are you?  Do I need to write it in a way that you can read more slowly?  Okay, here goes:

I...did...not...threaten...chunk.  If that's still too fast for you, perhaps you'd like to go to the zoo and watch the turtles go streaking by.

Had I indicated an intention to seek chunk out and assault him, THAT would be a threat.  I offered to fight him, if he was so inclined.  He wasn't.  Get the difference now?  Yes, I AM ashamed that I would even consider such a thing.  Nearly three decades ago, I vowed that I would never again hurt another human being, and I briefly lost sight of that.

And yes, chunkie's lack of civility IS his fault!  Letting the POS get under my skin was mine, but he won't get under it again.

stormy

Oh; and I don't listen to limbaugh, beck or hannity.  They are buffons, as are matthews and maddow.

stormy

Oops.  Typo.  Buffoons.

No I didn't say anything offensive but apparently there is a big baby who will cry if somebody says something mean to him.  Pretty sure that cry baby reported it.  I'm telling.  You sound like a real tough guy.  Like I said before the only people I know by the name of stormy are strippers.

stormy

So you hang out with strippers, eh?  Would they happen to be your mother and sisters?

My username (perhaps ill-chosen, I must admit) was based on my actual nickname: BlackCloud, which was hung on me by a friend who happened to be Lakota.  He said it was because my appearance was rather serious and gloomy.  Maybe I should've signed on as BlackCloud, but since quite a few people already knew me by that handle, I didn't.

And you should talk; maybe I'll just cally you "dooshy" from now on.  The spelling's kinda cute, don't you think?

I didn't hit the "abuse" button, by the way.  Not my style; makes my responses irrelevant, if people can't see what I'm responding to.  In fact, I never saw what you wrote.  Was on my way to play golf when you posted it, and it was gone before I logged back in.

Just remember, sweetheart; I won't resort to physical violence; I won't let ol' chung get under my skin, and the same goes for his pals.  But I never said I'd sit here and take whatever y'all throw at me.  From now on, whatever insults you come up with, I'll top 'em.  Getting even is a lot more fun than getting mad, and getting ahead is even better.  Heh-heh-heh.

brutus smith

I actually blame bryan for bringing out the strong emotional anger of people. I think he's trying to be rush or glenn.

stormy

Brutus, I don't watch or listen to either of those fellows, so I don't know how Mr. Dubois compares to them.  But right-wingers don't have a monopoly on stirring things up, you know.  Your friend chung could induce Mother Teresa to drop an F-bomb (if she weren't dead, that is).

Julie R.

I'm afraid I am going to have to agree with Pator Ron here, Mr. Dubois. If anybody is a whispering coward I do so think it is YOU.

Julie R.

Pastor Ron accuses Bryan of bringing false witness against Chung Lee......

Isn't that the norm here in Erie County, Bryan----bringing false witness? That's what I've heard, anyway. Seems to me there's a certain person in this county (I will mention no names) who everybody is supposed to live in fear of.  Why I don't know because he and his nasty group of old thugs in the legal system certainly don't scare me, even though I have heard they have brought false witness against a lot of people. So maybe while Pastor Ron is praying for your soul he might want to pray for them, too. On the other hand, I personally wouldn't waste my time praying for dirt bags like that.

brutus smith

Oh come on Stormy, I looked a Chung Lee as bringing the news and facts with a Jon Stewart, of the Dailey Show, flare to it. You just need to lighten up a bit, and I know what happened to you early in life has an effect. So argue your points, be firm, but chuckle a little bit also. It will be good for your health and your soul. :)

 MAJOR......

stormy

Okay, Brutus, I'll concede this much: ol' Chung CAN be funny sometimes.  A few months back, I criticized "free trade," and wrote that all it had done was fill our Wal-Marts with cheap Chinese crap.  A few minutes later, Chung chimes in with:

"Hey...Chung never crap in Wal-Mart!"

I almost fell out of my chair laughing.

On the other hand, he can be mean-spirited, and when he gets personal, he goes for the jugular.  I was trying to keep it civil on this thread, knowing how passionate both sides of the abortion debate can be.  It wasn't me who turned it into a pi$$ing contest.  Nonetheless, I'll try to lighten up, as you suggest.
