BLOG: Who Wins The Title Of 'Whispering Coward'?

Before we get to the whispering coward...

Who exactly has the "vendetta"?

I guess we don't have to wonder anymore if they still hate her.

The AP is now advising journalists to stop using the phrase "ground zero mosque."  I think this is a great example of news outlets using loaded phrases to hype up news coverage - but then wanting to change the official narrative after their hype negatively affects their politics.  (Yes, it reads like a Dem talking points memo.)   You can't blame them for not being able to predict that Obama and Dem leaders like Pelosi would come out and vocally support the builders of the mosque, can you?

Another great comic from Don Lee:

Which SR commenter most deserves the title, "whispering coward?"

First we need a consensus on the top three.  If we get the same few screen names, we'll bring it to a vote.

As your guideline, only choose commenters who consistently make anonymous personal attacks on other commenters, public officials, persons-of-known-identity without substantially challenging their ideas or positions.

Of course you'll have to back up your nomination with a sample of your nomination's online comments, so be sure to do that -- or risk becoming the 'whispering coward' yourself!

Have at it...

Hmmmmm. I thought news people were to report the news, accurately, not make it.

Repubs have nothing, nada. zilch.

Whaddya mean, Brutus?

Mr. Dubois:

Re: Mosque term changes.

Reminds me of the Bolsheviks use of what they called “word magic.” Say that a failed plan has run its course; repeat the same plan but only with a new name.

Quoting the link:

“Obama has said he believes Muslims have the right to build an Islamic center in New York as a matter of religious freedom, though he's also said he won't take a position on whether they should actually build it.”

Reminds me of Mr. Clinton’s obfuscation regarding his use of marijuana. And also Mr. Kerry’s: I was for it before I was against it.

Know this: Nothing gets built in NYC unless the unions support it. Has anyone polled the local building trade locals?

Only if one is naive enough to believe in objectivity.

Re: Objectivity.

Another way to put it:  The very act of reporting on one subject while ignoring another shows a lack of objectivity.

News people repeating the term Ground Zero Mosque when it is not at Ground Zero. Report the facts.

Mr. Dubois:

In the book “Amusing Ourselves to Death,” the late Neil Postman did a marvelous analysis of the history of news reporting.

Until the invention of the telegraph, most news was local.

According to Mr. Postman: Society as we know it will not end as in “1984” but “Brave New World.”

Regarding objectivity: In quantum physics, the Observer Effect states that the observer changes the observed.

The classic in industrial psychology was the Hawthorne Effect.

And who decided exactly where is "Ground Zero"?

Whether you choose to accept it or not: Perception is reality.

Mr. Obama's middle name is Hussein. Why on Earth would anyone possibly think that he might be a Muslim?

Chung Lee

It appears that there is not a conspiracy but responsible journalists are trying to provide more accuracy to the story.  Interesting that Salon traced it back to right wing smear merchants and Rupert Murdoch.  Regardless, it doesn't change the fact that this is a community center located in Manhattan and not a mosque located at ground zero.  Chung Lee wonders why the right wingers can't get it right even when faced with the facts. Can't they see the difference or do they just refuse to?

SamAdams

Brutus, it all depends on how you define "Ground Zero." If you suggest that ground zero is ONLY the footprint of the World Trade Center buildings, then "Ground Zero Mosque" is a misnomer. But if you consider ground zero to be the immediately affected area — where debris from the airliners fell, for example — then the Ground Zero Mosque is, indeed, squarely within the boundaries of ground zero.

Regardless of definitions, many people believe the location is plenty close enough to be disrespectful at best. I'm one of them.

Was this mosque too close to ground zero?

As far as Chung Lee knows, this is a community center and not a mosque.  If it is a mosque because people may pray there at times...... does that mean all the football stadiums, baseball parks, and nascar tracks are churches?  Does that mean that people who want prayer in school really want to turn our schools into churches?  Chung Lee would like to see some consistency in the dialogue but unfortunately many on the right want to obscure the real issues.

Chung Lee

Chung Lee wonders why many of the right wing Americans embrace the radical "eye for an eye" to the more moderate "turn the other cheek"?  People of other religions must wonder if Christianity is really a religion of peace.

"The imam who is behind plans to build a mosque near Ground Zero insisted yesterday..."  taken out of the usa today newspaper..  the right is not making up the word mosque rather they who want it are.

Gee, after asking for nominations for "whispering coward", some of the people who are going to be front runners have suddenly become sweeter than a sack of candy.
