How would you change this website?

The difficult part of my job is not finding new ideas, there are loads of them, good ones, all over the place. It's picking what to do next (and, of course, it's not entirely up to me).

My Dad (a newspaperman since his first paper route when he was still in knee-pants -- seriously, he wore knee pants) always said that what he loved about this business is that every day is new, fresh, different. That's both a good and a bad thing -- they don't call the newspaper the daily miracle for nothing.

And while I'm focused on something different, what my Dad liked is very close to what I like now too -- there's all kinds of new stuff to try. We're one of the more aggressive local newspapers in the country online, and we've barely yet scratched the surface of what can be done online.

So if you had my job for a day, and you could pick the next thing we change or add to this website, what would it be?

I would make people sign on with a user name to comment on stories and I would monitor it much better. There are some really irrelevant comments made out there and it is more like a teenage "myspace" than a NEWS paper site.

If you want to know what to change about this website, simply go to the comments section of the Nat'l Guard/Perkins High welcome ceremony article. This is a prime example of the abuse of comment privileges on this website and of the Register's continuing inability and evident indifference to do anything about it!

Your myspace analogy is almost spot on. Except if some of the comments on here were left on myspace, myspace would have taken them down.

Bring back the Registercam that let you look at downtown Sandusky.

Make people register to post comments under stories.

Post ALL letters to the editor (unless they're libelous).

Have more links within stories.

Get rid of all those lame Funcoast stories.

An alert system like Perkins schools has so that you can signup for keyword alerts (also like Google) and get them emailed to you or sent to your cell phone.

More later.....

so.....

Register, what are you going to do about all of this?? Your comments are OUT OF HAND.

Do like Newscenter 8 used to do with Tom Meyer & Carl Monday...have a Register Eye Team & go busting city officials & run it on the webcast...since this town is too weak to have a local t.v station.
That's funny...Mansfield is the same size as Sandusky & they have THREE t.v stations.

10 days and 37 comments later and still no response from Nick White. I hope his bosses are paying attention.

Dude, the Mansfield metro area has over 125,000 people, Sandusky metro area just over 77,00.

like POODLE GIRL's blog and the worthless Snap Crackle Pop Culture junk. Make it more about your readers. Less about you all.

Clark back at helm of Sandusky NAACP:

Did we notice that this article run yesterday didn't leave an option to write anything? Another one of the RAGISTER'S ploys to control. I say everyone cut and paste this on all the blogs and we can comment on it from each blog. Let's see if they will disable all the blogs. Why bother to write the article on the blogs when you disable the comment section. If you are going to pitch MATT you have to be willing to catch!!!

Where are the online forums?

Mr. White,

I too would like to know what happened to the Forums.

I really wish that you would answer questions posted to you on your blog. Do ignore questions is rude on your part.

After a second attempt, I am finally a member of the Forums. But I never received a validation email like I was supposed to receive to activate my membership. Mr. White, if you are having technical problems with the website, why don't you state that you are having problems? Is this why the Forums are not accessible?
