How would you change this website?

The difficult part of my job is not finding new ideas, there are loads of them, good ones, all over the place. It's picking what to do next (and, of course, it's not entirely up to me).

My Dad (a newspaperman since his first paper route when he was still in knee-pants -- seriously, he wore knee pants) always said that what he loved about this business is that every day is new, fresh, different. That's both a good and a bad thing -- they don't call the newspaper the daily miracle for nothing.

And while I'm focused on something different, what my Dad liked is very close to what I like now too -- there's all kinds of new stuff to try. We're one of the more aggressive local newspapers in the country online, and we've barely yet scratched the surface of what can be done online.

So if you had my job for a day, and you could pick the next thing we change or add to this website, what would it be?

I think you need better, in depth reporting. I think you have a great website but it is still garbage in garbage out no matter what your technology.

I would ask that you remove these comment sections, because the abuse on them has become out of control and the Register is either unable or unwilling to fix the problem. Maybe it would be best to simply return to the old days and make our only option a "Letter to the Editor" if we think we have an opinion worth sharing. That way the rampant nastiness and abuse which has become the norm on here would be controlled, since the writer would have to give their real name. I doubt the Register will ever do the right thing, though. Seems as though you love all the mean-spiritedness because it creates more controversy and interest in this website.

Nick- go to 9220 Portland road Castalia. Sandusky Crushed Stone. Go in and ask to see Blake Silkwood. Be prepared to look in the mirror. You two could be twins. No lie. Go check it out.

This is a new era for Journalism. The good old days are over. Instead of reporting the news, the media (including SR) has to put in their own message, their own agenda on paper,TV or internet.
I would love to see the reporting on the news..no bias..who cares what the reporter, journalist, editor etc..own opinion is. Report, let the people make up their own minds. I don't want to base my opinion on someone elses opinion.
In todays world it's all about the bottom line.$$$$$$$$$$

Enough with the unmoderated blogging. We know you like it because it gets you website hits (and therefore ad revenue), but it just makes your paper seem trashy with all of the ignorant, hate-filled comments.

Anonymous

How about this Nick? As many bloggers have asked in the past, why not make everyone have a constant moniker and valid email address? Is that too much to ask?

Anonymous

When you have rabid comments start on a blog, move all comments on that blog into a que and flag the blog as being on delay to uphold Community values. Delete the obvious trash and then post the rest of the comments.
Start a credible investigative reporter program at the SR and do the legwork to bring the claimed corruption and problems to task. This would probably require a "Inquiring Minds Want to Know" blog and all comments on this blog would need to go into a que to assure the integrity of the Blog. The greatest challenge would be to keep the questions that criticize the SR in proper prospective as the truth hurts and we all have a problem when we are criticized accepting the need to improve.

Nick, You should learn to answer questions when asked. Are you a rude person? In the past, people have asked you a question or posted a comment that should have been followed by your comments. I noticed that "Ralph" asked you a question why you were deleting his comments yet you allowed attacks on people to remain. Why is that, Nick?
Why don't you reply to questions on your blog?

This newspaper is not the same newspaper from years ago. Years ago, this newspaper reported true news but it is nothing but an opinion rag now.
William Randolph Hearst would be very proud of the yellow journalism.

I noticed that the Forums are about dead as a lot of members have stopped posting. Even the comments on the news stories are way down except for personal attacks on anyone that has the misfortune to have their name or picture posted in the news stories.

Before you came onboard, Patrick O'Brien had his hands full with the hundreds of comments posted daily. He did a fairly good job of deleting vulgar comments and kept good order. Comments about Perkins Township had hundreds of comments and Patrick suggested starting up a "Perkins Buzz" Forum.

Now you come along and just look at the Perkins Township comments. Very dead in my opinion. You and yours would delete comments that were worth reading but leave up all of the garbage and trash. Many people got tired of formulating ideas and comments only to have their comments deleted. Those people figured that they had better things to do than to waste their time here for nothing if their comments are deleted for no reason at all. In the past, comments were deleted with a brief message of why they were deleted but the name and time of the comment still remained.

If I ran this newspaper, you would get a pink slip from me. You are not doing a good job as you show no effort at all. By ignoring questions on your blog shows what a rude person that you are. I like Tom's and Sue's blogs because they answer questions posted to them. But not you, Nick. I can see why people tend to ignore your blog. You ignore people with questions. You ignore people and people will then ignore you.
These are not my opinions, these are facts.

I agree with the posters below about cleaning up the comments left on the site.

Racist, homophobic, and just plain hurtful remarks abound. Even obituaries become a target for speculation about the cause of death or character of the deceased.

Any poor Joe who gets his name in a newspaper article becomes a target for anyone with an ax to grind or a vengeful nature.

Clean it up, please!

- Requirement to have an account tied to an e-mail account (not publicly displayed unless opted-in by account holder) in order to comment.

- The entirety of all daily newspaper articles on the website, not just snippets (I know, I know, this will likely never happen)

- An easier way to browse archives, beyond just a really poor search engine.

- Maybe some social networking features, the ability to save an article on a user's delicious, or stumble upon account, or the ability to even digg articles? Maybe the ability to select a custom sandusky register style sheet (holiday themed, OS themed, leisure, local sports team, etc.), or even, in the most basic form, the ability to customize the overall site type size for accessibility sake.

- Local Event calendar that's easy to use and sort through.

That's all I've got... overall, I like the SR browsing experience compared to many other area papers. It's fairly clean, easily navigable, and concise, but sometimes a little too much so.

I probably wouldn't incorrectly use em dashes so much.

Get rid of Matt Westerhold and you will have the best cite on the net

I too would appreciate a response in your next blog with your thoughts on the answers we've given in response to your question.

MODERATE THE COMMENTS!!!!!

Seriously it has gotten so bad, so out of hand that it makes your IT department look unprofessional. Make people sign up, like on the forum page. Olive has to have some sort of support for this. I know that this would decrease your webtraffic, but it would also make the Register look more like a quality, respectable news website.

I entered my email if you have any further questions.

Anonymous

Yes, please moderate the comments. The SR website has become sleazy and unprofessional and does a great disservice to our community. We all know there are racists and haters and nutcases in every part of our nation, but that does not mean the Register has to give the local wackos a free, unmoderated forum.

You made the Regurgitator!

Anonymous

What else needs to be said.

Anonymous

The Regurgitator is really starting to stink. What happened to all the good stuff?

Anonymous

what's the regurgitator?

Anonymous

The Regurgitator is a semi-serious sppof of the Sandusky Register

http://sanduskyregurgitator.blog...

Anonymous

Lately it looks as thought the Regurgitator wants a copyright lawsuit. Maybe the Register needs to put them in their place.

Please don't remove the comments section as others have stated. I like free speech--other apparently do not. Also I like your opinions on the blog. Just because you state an opinion, I don't have to accept it as gospel. It's an opinion--it's a blog. Sheesh!! Keep giving your opinions--you are the researchers.

Nick,
A friend of mind signed up for the forums on December 9 with the name Inquisitive Mind and is still awaiting to be validated as she has submitted a vaild email address. Today is the 15th.

I think you need to take a class on the First Amendment.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Nobody here is asking for congress to remove your rights. We are only asking for the Register, as a private business, to be a tad bit more responsible for their web content.

If you are related to Dudley White, ask some of the family about values, character and integrity, and you will not need to ask the opinions of 23 people, then if you practice it, you will have a successful newspaper.
I realize that the trash journalism is cash journalism, however this is getting to be really ridiculous.

I would not worry about this site, lets worry about the terrible editing in the paper, lets take for example in todays 12/16/08 register page #2 you have 3 stories that just stop in the middle of of the story, maybe they should call Kinzel at Cedar Point and get his idea on this since he is in the paper all the time and never has to pay for advertising like the rest of us do.

Anonymous

Nick, when are you going to respond to these ideas that we your readers have submitted at your request? Just curious to see if you will actually acknowledge our suggestions. Obviously the out-of-control comment sections are the major concern expressed here and we all hope the SR will step up and fix things.

Anonymous

For starters release you of your duties.

Mr. White,
I signed up for the Forums several days ago and awaited an email response so that my account could be activated. I waited several days but never received a verification email. I could not re-submit the information because I got the message that the handle "Inquisitive
Mind" was already taken. So today, I decided to register again today with a similar name but found that "Inquisitive Mind" which was awaiting verification was deleted from the list of members on the Forums.

Since the name was deleted, I was able to register again for the Forums with the same name. When I registered and sent in the information with my email address, I was given the message to check my email for a verification email that was supposed to be sent within 10 minutes. It has now been well over 3 hours when I registed today and still no verification email from you or the Sandusky Register. What is going on?

Why have you not responded to any of these comments?
