What aging is supposed to be like ... and knowing the difference

There was a time when older people didn't have rights. When their mental or physical capacity started to deterorate, it wasn't uncommon for someone to step in, take over and give little or no respect to the wishes of that older person. Decades ago that was what aging was like. Thank goodness those actions are illegal today if the older person is still largely competent and capable.

Understanding what aging is supposed to be like is important if our society is going to function well with a large population of aging people who feel vulnerable about losing their independence. According to the Cuyahoga County Adult & Senior Services Web site, over 16,000 cases of elder abuse, neglect or exploitation have been reported in the state of Ohio. Half are cases of self-neglect. The abused or neglected person is typically over the age of 75, a widowed woman and socially isolated.

Serving Our Seniors and the Erie County Department of Job & Family Services have put together a public presentation entitled, "What Should Aging Be Like?" from 2 to 4 p.m Sept. 24, at the Erie County Service Center (next to the fairgrounds) at 2900 Columbus Ave, Sandusky. Bernie Brooks, Senior & Adult Services of Cuyahoga County will educate the audience using anonymous cases of elder abuse and neglect entitled, "Sometimes Aging Isn't Pretty."

- Sheriff Terry Lyons and Adult Protective Services staff Erie County Prosecutor Kevin Baxter and Erie County Probate Court Judge Bev McGookey will discuss how to report suspected elder abuse/neglect exploitation and what then happens.

- Judge Bev McGookey will also discuss that competent older people do have rights. (This is a fact that most people have a hard time understanding.)

The presentation will conclude with a series of questions and answers from the audience.

If you would like to attend, please RSVP by calling Serving Our Seniors, 419-624-1856 or 1-800-564-1856, no later than 5 p.m. Sept. 22. An audience of 15 or more is required to justify the time and travel of the speakers.

Yes old people have rights, but they shouldnt have driver licenses.

Anonymous

Where the He** are they.
71 and still looking.
ART---We don't drive with cell phone in our ear like you younger people do, driving as long as we can get around ok, isn't as many accidents like the younger people make, get real and be nice.

Anonymous

Art you are so right.

Yes golden years, you dont drive with a cell phone, but you do drive 20 mph and also 80 miles with your turn signal on for no reason. Ironically when you do turn you never use a turn signal and never look if you are pulling in front of anyone. Well I guess you are in an all fire hurry to get to the buffet where you order a water with your meal because you cant afford to spare a dollar for a pop, even though you tooled up to the place in a Lincoln Town Car. And speaking of nice, elderly people are the rudest people in general, they think that age and seniority entitles them to special discounts and treatment. And speaking of discounts complaining they are on a fixed income and cant afford anything but yet once again shuffle off to their Cadillac to drive off into the sunset with there blinker on.

Anonymous

Why don't you come discipline ME? Idiot.

Rick Studer

I can tell you're excited RSB...

Anonymous

Why must all you freaks invade the blog and get it off topic? This communist attitude started as soon as we started that busing crap and has continued on since we allow gay marriage.

Anonymous

Don't mention gay marriage around Diick Studer.

Rick Studer

Anonymous

If I had to guess what Rick Studer is wearing, it would be a maroon robe, pink fuzzy slippers, black socks, tighty whiteys, and a poka dot scarf. All that AND smoking a pipe.

Anonymous

Anonymous

Wanna spoon with me and Rick? signed: Diick

Rick Studer

Don't forget the two nipple clamps in my pocket

Anonymous

Rick, will you tie me up and gag me with your sweaty black socks you are wearing?

Anonymous

Once again this is what happens when you allow immoral homosexuals to have rights. They have no self control thats why they go off bedding every man they can.

Anonymous

I would love to bed you Art.

Anonymous

I would love to stand at the gates at Delphi and have all the men give me their socks so I could take them home and lay in them and sniff them all night long.

Anonymous

Of course I am talking about taking their socks after a long days work. There is nothing like the sweaty socks of a working man.

Anonymous

Sinners Sinners Sinners, I am so utterly digusted right now. This is a blog about elderly and once again like they think they can take everything else over the gays have invaded. Get over it. It aint always about your rainbow rights.

Rick Studer

Sorry, I had to pause to consider this sock thing. You're sicker than I thought RSB. I would still consider you as a pet but only on a trial run...

Rick Studer

Over and out, I wonder if I'll be censored again...
