One killed in head-on crash involving car, school bus
Bay Twp.

At least one person is dead after a Port Clinton school bus and a vehicle crashed head-on in Bay Township, emergency crews said.

Troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol's Fremont post were called to the scene — just southwest of Port Clinton — at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, with firefighters from Bay Township and surrounding areas responding as well.

A Chevy Lumina driven by Diane Lau, 36, of Gibsonburg, was headed in one direction on Ohio 53, with a Port Clinton school bus headed in the opposite direction. There were no children on the school bus, but there was a bus aide.

Both the aide and the school bus driver suffered what appeared to be minor injuries and were taken by ambulance to Magruder Hospital.

The school bus was headed to pick up students at a technical school when it crashed. Crews said it appeared the Chevy Lumina drifted into the oncoming lane of travel.

My Aunt did not own or use cell phones. What caused the crash could have been due to medicine, or the bird she had in a cage in the car. Thank you to all who kept us in your prays. And for anyone w the annoying trash talkin, get the story straight 1st. I really wish the site wouldnt have cut out certain comments bc they would have been interesting, but thank you for the respect.  I talked to my Aunt everyday almost. I have 2 ppl in this world who loved me. Only 2. She was one, so do the math & pick my heart up off the floor for me ok. My life will never be the same. Ever.

I'd think twice before I quoted anything printed in the Fremont News Messenger as fact.  They couldn't get a story straight if the person writing it was a witness!

what a sad story.. it really is not fair to automatically state that cell phones, texting  putting on makeup etc are even considered to be a factor.. it seems to me that before all of these distractions were ever around, there were still plenty of accidents, and early death from accidents that they could not have been  the contributing factor in

even if you state that you know that they are not  necessarily the cause, to even mention them into the equation at this time, is unfair, and misleading..my heart goes out to the family and friends  of all that were involved..

if your not saying that's what happened...why mention it at all.  Save that comment for the times it REALLY DOES happen.  For other's don't say it unless you know it to be a fact.  I recall a recent accident where a young lady drifted left of center and hit a young man on a motorcycle and he died.  Right away because it was a female everyone started posting "texting" or "cell phone" .  I have yet to hear that was the factor in that accident and you know if it were it would have been all over this newspaper.  So if all you can do is post negative innuendos DON'T!

Barriers would help, very big barriers like in Cleveland, but cops wouldn't have that because they couldn't bust speeders going the other direction. At least w a barrier they'd slide into it & not oncoming traffic.

Thanksgiving is for those who appreciate what they have & give thanks for it; not for those who take & abuse the system for as much free stuff they can scam & rip off those who give thanks for having their jobs.

It's very tragic! It is right down the road from where I live. I don't think people should assume it was from talking on a phone when they don't know the facts yet. I pray for the familys involved.

No one said it was because of a cell phone.. they were stating some of the reasons that distract drivers and can cause them to be wreckless and go into the other lane.. obviously something distracted this driver to make them veer into oncoming traffic, what it may have been we may never know, either way they lost their life because of it and that is tragic.. i pray for the families involved and i hope that it teaches people to pay more attention to the road and whats going on around them.

Barriers wouldn't help.  People would just fly up over them.  And it's not just SR 53.  I've had people drift over in my lane on most all the roads I've traveled on in this area and up near Toledo.  What would help is paying attention, being alert, putting down the cell phone, makeup, etc and driving defensively and not impaired.

re:  cityslicker

A barrier.......why?  Is it too novel an idea to stay on your own side of the road?  Oh, dumb me.......I forgot, it was probably a life or death cellphone call or text!!

Another tragic head-on crash on SR 53. They need to put a barrier down that entire stretch from PC to Fremont.
