Sandusky County Sheriff's deputies shot and killed a 26-year-old Fremont man during a stand-off at his residence in Ballville Township late Sunday night.

According to Sheriff Kyle Overmyer, deputies responded to 3445 Tiffin Road just south of Fremont at 9:50 p.m. Sunday after family members of Bryan Jones reported that he had threatened to harm himself and another family member.

When deputies arrived they looked through windows into the house and saw Jones sitting on the couch holding a shot gun, Overmyer said.

The department coordinated at tactical response team, which decided to enter the residence at about 11:30 p.m. They tossed a flash-bang device into the residence and four deputies entered through a front door, Overmyer said.

Seconds later shots rang out. Overmyer said two deputies discharged their weapons after encountering Jones immediately upon entering.

Overmyer said Jones is believed to have had his shot gun raised at the deputies when they entered. He said as per protocol, the deputies have been placed on paid leave until the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation completes an investigation into the incident. He said he is not releasing the names of the deputies as per the request of prosecutor Tom Stierwalt.

Stierwalt did not immediately return calls for comment Monday afternoon.
