HURON
Register photo/JASON WERLING Two kayaks maneuver Lake Erie off the backyard of Nancy Moyer's home in Huron.
Huron is blooming in red, white and blue as the city and township celebrate their bicentennial.
The public is invited to take in the scenery Saturday with a garden tour and a flower show.
The Red, Whiteand Bloomin' Garden Tour, which benefits the Huron Historical Society, is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with five stops.
"Because of the bicentennial, we are including more neighborhoods where people can just park their car and walk along," organizer Patti Smith said.
Those neighborhoods are Sail Away Drive and Lakeway Drive in Chaska Beach. The other stops are the butterfly garden at Woodlands Intermediate School and two individual homes.
Tickets for the garden tour are $15 and include a map and a breakfast to be served at Chaska Beach. They are on sale at Barnes Nursery, Ace Hardware, Curves and the Chamber of Commerce.
Tickets may also be purchased between8:30-9:30 at the Huron Public Library on Saturday morning.
The tour will feature another bicentennial twist this year: the ARTirondack chairs that will be auctioned off later this summer will be on display at Sail Away Drive and Chaska Beach.
If residents haven't had enough flowers by then, they can head to St. Peter Catholic Church on Main Street for a flower show.
It's the first of its kind in Huron, Huron Garden Club member Mary Strayer said.
"I thought it's time that Huron had one, and I thought it would be fun for the club to start it and that it would get the community together," she said.
Invitations went out to garden clubs in the area, and anyone may submit specimens or arrangements from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday.
After judging and prizes sanctioned by the Ohio Garden Club Association, the entries will be open for viewing from 12-2 p.m.
Entries including red, white and blue blooms are encouraged to go along with the bicentennial theme.
Barb Toft, a member of the Huron Garden Club, said residents should come to the show "to celebrate and to come and see the beautiful things that can be done."
