Gage James, 19, 100 block Adams St., and Jeffrey Hitlan, 21, 1300 block Beechview Drive, were both charged with breaking and entering, a fifth-degree felony. In mid-February, a $400 tool kit was stolen from the East Mason Road home of James’ stepfather, according to a deputy’s report.

Though the man initially suspected James’ involvement, he did some sleuthing on his own. James told his stepfather his former friend, Hitlan, may be to blame and directed the man to a resale shop in Lorain. The man located his tool kit there and informed deputies. A worker said Hitlan sold the kit weeks ago in exchange for $35, the report said.

But something still seemed amiss, as the thief would have had to pass by a handful of large, aggressive, protective dogs in the family’s backyard. Hitlan later said James asked him to sell the kit at the shop on his behalf. After doing so, the pair allegedly bought heroin with the spoils, Hitlan said.
