UPDATED 10 p.m.: Betty Powers, 69, of Sandusky, died a few hours after the crash, according to Erie County deputies.

Powers appears to have suffered a medical problem, which may have caused the crash. She was flown to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, where she died shortly before 9 p.m.

The driver of a car involved in a three-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon on Cleveland Road in Huron Township was flown by medical helicopter to a Toledo hospital.

Details on the victims were not immediately available, but Erie County deputies said the woman who was flown to the hospital was the only person injured.

The crash happened at about 5 p.m. in front of Barnes Nursery. When traffic slowed in front of the nursery, one vehicle struck a car ahead, which in turn caused that car to strike a vehicle ahead.

The car that initiated the crash continued accelerating, meanwhile, tearing away from the other cars and then traveling across a parking lot and through a tree line before slamming into a tree. The car then caught fire, prompting bystanders to pull the woman from the vehicle.

My god do people not know how to drive

You clowns don't even read the articles. It states she had a medical episode. Has nothing to do with driving.

Stay classless my friends.

my comment had nothing to do with the accident. it was a general reply to a general question. have a better day!

Good 2 B Me

Sorry to hear.

She had a medical episode happen.

Jeeez Can't you people just stfu when you don't know the whole story? MUST you just assume the girl was texting/drinking/on drugs/just can't drive or whatever today's whine is about? God forbid it would ever be one of you on the wrong end of one of these articles! smdh

Agreed! I see someone has changed their tune, if you saw the comments earlier. Most people are so quick to jump when they don't know the story. Someone said "was that text worth it" and now says "sorry to hear" ... Glad that person is sorry to hear now that we know it was a medical condition and not someone being irresponsible. Either way it would have been sad! A family lost someone that I'm sure they loved tremendously.

my deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Ms Powers.

my sympathys to the family.... We were hoping she was going to make it but we're very sad to hear the news this morning

actually they should disable commenting on accidents in my opinion.

What a horror story for all involved. And let's not pretend that THIS one was ANYbody's fault! "Medical problem" could easily mean something as unexpected as a heart attack, a case of vertigo, a seizure, a stroke...and just about anything else that could prove a significant distraction. Those things aren't typically planned, nor are they avoidable.

Sympathies to the family of the deceased, and best wishes to the rest involved in the accident. As for the REST of you, well, it's one thing to use an accident caused by texting or drinking or stupidity as an example for others. It's entirely another thing to jump to the conclusion that somebody was dumb and at fault! SHAME on you for having no evidence and making the accusation(s) anyway!

Ohlemacher curve has been claiming lives since the mid 1800's. You'd think by now people would be careful.

Did you read the article? Apparently she had a medical problem. Being careful or not careful had nothing to do with the accident.

It didn't happen at Ohlemacher Curve (which is near Erie Ave). I believe it is called Slate Cut.

and btw people don't learn from history.

I usually do not comment on articles like this. But this was my mother and for all the inconsiderate comments..you should be ashamed. No she wasn't texting. She had a medical issue. We are all going through a very rough and unexpected time and for you to make rude and unnecessary comments is beyond belief. She had a husband, 2 kids, and 5 grandchildren. For those of you who sent your sympathy...thank you. It helps during these trying days.
