50 years ago, 1964: Mrs. Faye Francis, Willoughby mother of two, would attempt her twice-postponed swim from Canada to Cedar Point. She would start her 20 mile swim from Fish Point on Pelee Island at 9:30 p.m. She hoped to arrive at Cedar Point's mile long beach by 11:30 a.m. the following day.

25 years ago, 1989: The government imposed a ban on asbestos that would be phased in over seven years on almost everything containing the cancer-causing material, including automobile brakes. The ban would eventually forbid manufacture, importation and distribution of about 94 percent of asbestos products.

10 years ago, 2004: After nearly two weeks in the air, millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett neared completion of his bid to become the first solo balloonist to circle the globe, one of aviation's last barriers. Fossett, whose five previous attempts were plagued by crashes, was headed for the finish line ahead of schedule.
