50 years ago, 1964: Fire broke out in the basement of Lombardy Music Store at 216 E. Market St., on the 25th anniversary of the worst fire in Sandusky's history. Flames shot through the interior of the three-story building and threatened to set off an explosion of paint drums owned by nearby Sandusky Paint Co.

25 years ago, 1989: A judge sent yachting's top prize - the America's Cup - from San Diego to New Zealand, ruling that "Stars & Stripes" skipper Dennis Conner created a "gross mismatch" by racing a sleek catamaran against the challenger's more traditional yacht.    (NOTE: this decision was overturned in the courts in Sept. of 1989 and the cup was returned to the U.S.)

10 years ago, 2004: The Visteon Corp. was awarded the 2004 Automotive News PACE Award for a filtration system that was manufactured in the company's Margaretta Township plant.
