25 years ago, 1989: His hopes for freedom crushed, James Earl Ray turned 61 at the Brushy Mountain State Prison on the 20th anniversary of the day he pleaded guilty to killing Martin Lither King Jr. Ray, serving 99 years for murdering King in 1968, was blocked from early parole by Tennessee Gov. Ned McWherter.
