50 years ago, 1964: Sandusky downtown merchants started their annual Hatchet Day sales, chopping prices as tradition said George Washington did his father's famed cherry tree. The Washington birthday two-day event had stores opening at 9:30 a.m.

25 years ago, 1989: About 174 ice fishing enthusiasts  had to be fished off Lake Erie after going adrift on a giant floe. A mile-long section of ice just off Catawba island broke away from shore. It took Coast Guard helicopters over three hours to rescue all the fishermen.

10 years ago, 2004: Mega Millions got lucky. Chance and the addition of the state of Texas to the 11-state lottery pushed its jackpot to a record $215 million. A winner would get the world's eighth largest lottery jackpot.
