50 years ago, 1963: Feddersen's Bakery advertised "Don't forget to get your New Year's Pretzel." Available through Dec. 31 at Federsen's on Market St., Krogers, Wally's and Welter's. 

25 years ago, 1988: Smokey the Bear was planning a comeback. In the aftermath of the nation's worst season of wildfires since the Dust Bowl, weary forest rangers looked to Smokey to make a difference. Millions of burned acres were caused by careless human actions.

10 years ago, 2003: A Pittsburgh woman on her way to buy Christmas gifts found her car missing, with her purse and $200 in it. On Christmas Eve she found a blue envelope on her front step with a note apologizing for the theft and directions to her car. The car was found with her purse under the seat. The money was missing and the police impounded the car, suspecting it was used in three other crime.
