50 years ago, 1963: Local, county and state officials continued their investigation into the cause of the fire that claimed 63 lives at the Golden Age Nursing Home in Fitchville. The flames left only 21 of the 84 residents of the home safely accounted for.

25 years ago, 1988: A new Justice Department study reported that about 3.4 million people, nearly 2 percent of the U.S. adult population, were in the custody of federal, state or local corrections departments.

10 years ago, 2003: A Bay View resident, Arnold Hamilton, was astounded when he nabbed a 30-point buck from Resthaven Wildlife Area. Hunter counted 33 points on the deer's antlers, a number that was waiting to be confirmed by the Boone and Crockett Club.

Interesting numbers from 1988. True or false?

"America has around 5% of the world’s population, and 25% of its prisoners. Roughly one in every 107 American adults is behind bars, a rate nearly five times that of Britain, seven times that of France and 24 times that of India. Its prison population has more than tripled since 1980."

Hope and change?
