50 years ago, 1963: Paul Zuber, a Negro leader in the fight against Northern school segregation, announced he would enter the New Hampshire Republican presidential primary as an independent.

25 years ago, 1988: President elect George Bush named James A. Baker as his Secretary of State. The announcement was widely praised by Democrats and Republicans alike in Congress.

10 years ago, 2003: Art Carney, who played Jackie Gleason's sewer worker pal Ed Norton in the TV classic "The Honeymooners" and went on to win the 1974 Oscar for best actor in "Harry and Tonto," died at age 85.
