50 years ago, 1963: The Russian blockade of a U.S. Army convoy on the road to Berlin was viewed here with more concern as each hour passed. U.S. officials expressed fear it could grow into a serious confrontation.

25 years ago, 1988: Charlie's Waffle House closed its doors after serving at least 100 persons who stopped by for one last meal. Charlie's was sold to Bennett Enterprises of Perrysburg, Ohio, with rumors it would be turned into law offices.

10 years ago, 2003: In a dramatic nail-biter the Sandusky City Commision race was won by Dan Kaman, Brett Fuqua, David Waddington and Dannie Edmon. Because of a glitch in the county's election equipment, the results took hours longer than expected.

I miss Charlie's. Great place for Sunday breakfast and, when I was working days, lunch. Sometimes a line out the door on Sunday mornings. And Helen, RIP, was a hilarious waitress and, later, co-worker.
