50 years ago, 1963: The new King Discount Drug Center had its grand opening at 232 Columbus Ave. It was the tenth King Store in Ohio. The new Dot Discount Drug Center had a grand opening as well, at 240 Columbus Ave.
25 years ago, 1988: Congress took a historic first shot at one of its own favorite pork barrels by voting to permit the shutdown of as many as 25 military bases. The Senate overwhelmingly passed the bill 82-7, the House 370-31. The move could save $2 to $5 billion a year.
10 years ago, 2003: Nearly one-quarter of the 130,000 U.S. troops in Iraq still had not been issued ceramic body armor strong enough to stop bullets fired from assault rifles. Delays in funding, production and shipping meant it would be months before all troops had the vest.
