50 years ago, 1963: Singer Frank Sinatra surrendered $3.5 million in Nevada gaming interests. The Nevada Gaming Commission was trying to revoke his license on grounds he entertained underworld figure Sam Giancana at Sinatra's Cal-Neva lodge.

25 years ago, 1988: The Senate overwhelmingly passed a comprehensive anti-drug bill that cracked down hard on casual drug-users, traffickers and called for the death penalty for drug bosses and their hired killers.

10 years ago, 2003: Hall of Fame jockey Bill Shoemaker, who rode four Kentucky Derby winners, and was a commanding presence in thoroughbred racing for more then 40 years, died at the age of 72.
