50 years ago, 1963: One of out every 12 adults in America were taking tranquilizers regularly, according to a survey in a leading chemical industry journal. The pills, introduced just seven years prior, were the third largest selling prescription drugs. Annual sales were well over $200 million.

25 years ago, 1988: A judge ordered Disneyland to pay a teenager $250 for denying her entrance to the amusement park because her hair was pink and purple. He also ordered Disneyland to pay her legal costs in filing the civil-rights lawsuit.

10 years ago, 2003: For the second time in 2003, a federal judge threw out a class-action lawsuit that blamed McDonald's for making its customers fat. The U.S. District Court judge said plaintiffs failed to show that the fast-food chain misled consumers into believing its food was nutritious.
