50 years ago, 1963: The Chevrolet Airosphere Car Show was held at the Cedar Point Parade grounds for nine days. The show consisted of an air conditioned unit 100 x 40 ft., inflated and held in place by air pressure. An experimental automobile, the LP-700 Corvette, was the top attraction.
25 years ago, 1988: Coney Island beaches were closed due to syringes and blood vials washed ashore, keeping nearly 750,000 beachgoers crammed on the Boardwalk. The tide-borne medical debris forced swimmers to stay dry on the 90 degree day.
10 years ago, 2003: Britain sweltered through its hottest day on record and Alpine glaciers melted as a heat wave baked much of Europe for days. A reading of 100.2 degrees at Heathrow Airport was reported.
