50 years ago, 1963: There were very few areas of the lake or bay the Health Department could give full approval for swimming, stated a report from Erie County Health Department. High numbers of the "coliform bacillus" were found in both bodies of water. The bacillus was caused by untreated sewage.   
25 years ago, 1988: Sp4 Alan Strause, Castalia, was named Soldier of the Quarter at the National Training Center, Fort Irwin, Calif. He already won three Army Achievement Medals, two for high performance standards in battle.
10 years ago, 2003: It was the nation's first export and the collateral for financing the American Revolution. But with lawsuits, less smoking, import competition and the dismantling of government controls, farmers planted the smallest tobacco crop in 2003 since Gen. Ulysses S. Grant was president.
