50 years ago, 1963: City Commissioner Harold Schaeffer wanted fellow commissioners to reconsider the purchase of some $35,000 worth of new parking meters. He noted that some cities were doing away with them. Schaeffer suggested the only way to compete with free parking at shopping centers was to provide free parking downtown.

25 years ago, 1988: A California construction worker went 'berserk' in an earth grader, smashing 20 cars along a 6-mile route, then plowing into several planes at Chino Airport before being shot and wounded by police. Curious drivers, two helicopters, and law enforcement joined the slow, half-hour pursuit.

10 years ago, 2003: Cedar Point's Top Thrill Dragster was closed again for an entire day, securing itself another record. The park had never had a signature coaster down for as long as one week. To make matters worse, the park did not know when the world's tallest, fastest coaster would reopen.
