50 years ago, 1963: Gaylord Donnelley, president of R. R. Donnelley & Sons Co., presented Maurice Mitchell, president of Encyclopedia Britannica, with a specially-bound volume in honor of the 53 millionth volume of the enclyclopedia printed by Donnelley since 1910.
25 years ago, 1988: Pope John Paul II cut a birthday cake decorated with flags of countries he had visited and the words “Happy Birthday” in Polish. He received the cake as a gift for his 68th birthday from airline crew members on his way back to Rome after a 13-day tour of Latin America.
10 years ago, 2003: The Outlaws, a local biker club with headquarters on Dewitt Avenue, turned to the law for help in getting rid of a neighborhood eyesore. The former Young’s Tavern, right next door to the club, was falling down and infested with critters. The bar had not been operational since 1986, the fire department had written the structure off, and the property was in foreclosure.
