50 years ago, 1963: Ernest C. Mielke left the New York Central freight office on N. Depot Street for the last time as an employee - after 47 years of rail road service with only one day off work. Mielke began working with the railroad in 1917, when he was 18. "That was when the Big Four ran through Sandusky," he recalled.
25 years ago, 1988: Tennessee Sen. Albert Gore Jr. suspended his campaign for a Presidential bid, but pledged to to help elect another Democrat over Vice President George Bush.
10 years ago, 2003: A drunken Byzantine Catholic priest was accused of pulling a fire alarm at Sawmill Creek resort and touching hotel employees in a sexual manner. Sheriff deputies were dispatched to the resort to find an intoxicated man wearing only a shirt and one sock. He was transported Erie County Jail.
