50 years ago, 1963: Vowing to make Greenwood Miss. what they called ‘a testing ground for democracy,’ black Americans planned another march on the county courthouse in their drive to register as voters. Police, using dogs and civilian volunteers, twice dispersed the marchers.
25 years ago, 1988: Providence Hospital put five houses, but not the land they were on, on the auction block. The buildings on Pierce Street were used as housing for hospital employees. Providence planned to use the space for additional parking.
10 years ago, 2003: The Rolling Stones canceled their much anticipated first concerts in China because of the deadly SARS virus that was sweeping across Asia. The band had been scheduled to perform in Shanghai and Beijing, but changed their minds because of travel warnings from Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization.
