An off-duty Norwalk police officer came across a drunken driver on Ohio 61 Monday night, and stopped him from leaving until Erie County deputies arrived, according to a deputy’s report.

Chris Smith, 41, of North Fairfield, was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence, open container and persistent disorderly conduct intoxicated.

Both Norwalk police officer Tim Skinner and Norwalk resident John Brady happened upon Smith in the 13200 block of Ohio 61 E. around 9 p.m. and promptly called deputies, the report said.

The men noticed Smith’s empty truck in the road and saw he’d just fallen into a ditch, the report said.

Realizing Smith was likely intoxicated, they boxed his truck in between their own vehicles so he couldn’t drive off.

When deputies interacted with Smith, he continuously yelled profanities and caused problems.

Smith alleged his girlfriend was driving but “ran off”

“You didn’t see me driving, you can’t prove (expletive)” Smith told deputies, according to the report.

Deputies found the truck’s ignition key stashed in the console and arrested Smith after he refused sobriety tests, the report said.

While he was being taken to the Erie County jail, Smith continued cursing.

“I’m calling my buddy Ted Patrick about you, just wait” Smith allegedly told the deputy. “Someone is going to (expletive) you up, you better look out”
