Christopher Sibert, 19, was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence and underage consumption.

Sibert allegedly traveled off Bogart Road near the football field at about 1:30 p.m. Monday and immediately crashed into a large metal fence.

Sibert then drove through the yard and driveway of off-duty Erie County Deputy Justin Smith before fleeing the scene, Erie County Chief Deputy Jared Oliver said.

Smith alerted dispatchers to the crash, hopped in his car and tailed Sibert until he reached Strecker and Bemis roads, Oliver said.

There, Sibert stopped the car and awaited other deputies.

“They’ll probably have to replace some of the sections of fence; it was considerable damage” Castalia police Chief Ken Majoy said.

Deputies charged Sibert with driving under the influence, and Castalia police handled the crash investigation.

Majoy said Sibert will likely face additional charges of failure to control and leaving the scene of an accident.
