Perkins girls open season with close loss to Division II power Ottawa Hills

   ​Perkins’ Olivia Rohrbacher swept Ottawa Hills’ Lilli Boice, 6-0, 6-0, in a No. 1 singles battle of Division II state qualifiers from a year ago.

 

   However, it was the Green Bears that slipped past the host Pirates Friday, winning 3-2 in the early season non-conference battle between two of the premier girls tennis programs in Northwest Ohio.

   Rohrbacher, 33-1 as a freshman, made it to final eight in last year’s Division II singles tournament. Boice, a junior, fell in the opening round.

 

   Perkins got another singles point from Serena Bruno’s, 7-6 (14), 5-7, 3-2, third singles win over Ottawa Hills’ Julie Hoeflinger.

 

   Ottawa Hill’s Megan Berry topped Priscilla Nguyen, 6-1, 6-4 in second singles.

 

   The Green Bears swept the doubles courts with the Pirates’ Carlee Vaughn and Susan Jiang falling 6-0, 6-2 to Megan Healy and Kelsey Berry. Karina Haycook and Danielle Schwerer fell in a hard-fought three-set tiebreaker, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, at second doubles to the Ottawa Hills’ team of Morgan Billstein and Rachel Smithberger.
