Monroeville stuns New London

Eagles win first-ever FC title
May 30, 2014

At Monroeville, the Eagles stunned New London in walk-off fashion for a second time this season, earning a share of their first-ever Firelands Conference championship in softball.

“It was a complete team win,” Monroeville coach Abe Helmstetter said. “I am very proud of the team for a good attitude and the effort that they have had throughout the season”

Trailing 3-2 entering the bottom of the seventh, Monroeville (19-8, 12-2) scored once, then got a two-run home run from Ashley Schaffer to win the game, 5-3 — and force the title share.

It was the eighth straight FC title for New London (21-7, 12-2), who just a day earlier lost in walk-off fashion in a Div. III regional semifinal in nine innings to Elmwood.

For New London, Elise Chaffins had two hits and two RBIs. Taylor Moody had a double and Kelly Norrod earned an RBI.

Alex Bowers took the loss with six strikeouts and no walks.

The Eagles got a pair of singles from Haven Helmstetter, while Alex Schaffer and Macey Key each hit triples. Ashley Kraft — who beat New London by hitting a solo home run for a 1-0 win on April 29, struck out four and walked four to earn the pitching win.

Actually, it was Kady Gies who hit the solo homer to beat New London in the first (1-0) win over New London earlier. This second win over New London this season out of the two wins (sweet sweep) was as awesome as the first one. Unexpected, yet expected pleasures. And the Key triple...dang, that's hot! Defence...awesome! First time for volleyball in Monroeville going that far, and ditto for the softball. Time to rest my truck.
