Vanguard Tech Center students Hanna Pena, Heather Toller and Dana Englehart pose proudly, displaying a plaque to be mounted on the adult education public safety program’s Fire Safety Building, located at the school’s Fremont campus.

The plaque is a memorial for Toledo firefighters James “Jamie” Dickman and Stephan Machcinski, who were killed in a January fire. As part of a SkillsUSA American Spirit project, the trio of students coordinated the team efforts of various Vanguard Tech Center labs to plan, create and mount the plaque. Students in the welding lab cut and combined the metal to make the blue print design.

Auto collision lab students painted the plaque, while masonry lab students agreed to mount the plaque to the Fire Safety Building. Pena, Toller and Englehart started the project in February, after becoming inspired to show the respect and appreciation they have for area firefighters, Englehart said.
