A carjacker made off with a Huron man’s SUV Saturday evening when he briefly stopped in at a Cleveland Road gas station.

James Schwerer, 47, drove his white Chevy Suburban to Hy-Miler to buy a pack of cigarettes Saturday at about 7:30 p.m. When he walked outside, he saw his SUV turn on and start to pull away, a Sandusky police report said.

He gave chase, catching up to the vehicle on Roosevelt Street, where he managed to open the passengerside door and partially get inside. He tried to grab the car thief — described as a 40- to 50-year-old black man with a grayish, rough beard  — but was ultimately unable to, the report said.

The carjacker sped up and made a hard left turn onto South Larchmont Drive, flinging Schwerer onto the pavement.    When officers caught up to Schwerer, his face was bleeding and his hands were cut.

A witness said the thief ran Schwerer over as he made his escape, the report said.

During the struggle, Schwerer’s safe, which was in the passenger seat, fell out of the car as well.

Schwerer could not recall if he left his keys in the vehicle before he went into the gas station.

Sandusky police searched the surrounding areas but never found the Chevy. It was entered into a database as “stolen” and as of Monday evening it had yet to be found.

Who rides around with a safe in the front seat? And how do you not know if you left the keys in it? Seems like a simple thing to figure out.....do you still have the keys or not?

From the Grave

I always have my safe with me...

Dumb &ss.

OH-IO

Ladydye_5 have you ever been flung to the ground by a speeding car till you bashed your head on the concrete and started to bleed? You lose memory and and alot more. He probably had a concussion and is in disbelief. That's why he couldn't remember if he had his keys.

OH-IO

Dumb a__ for obviously leaving them in the car yes. LOL!

Contango

Even when you're pumping gas and standing by your vehicle - pocket the keys!

Contango, I like to mess with them. I leave it run and walk into the store, I can lock it from the outside with the non key on my person, push button start. Just waiting for one to mess around trying the doors and then I hit the panic or turn it off from the store. Hee Hee Hee!

Bottom Line

I firmly believe its JUST as likely that the thief could've been a 16 year old white girl. Just ask big dog.

Like you! Bottom line.

Unassumer

There are people that lurk around gas stations waiting for just such a situation. Don't leave your keys in the car and lock it when you go inside to pay. Be aware of your surroundings, as there is danger everywhere nowadays.

WhatTheHeck

I think it is terrible Sandusky had resorted that you have to have all these cautions to get gas and cigs. I can tell my his age that he was raised old school, back then when we raised we kept our front door unlocked!
