Fireworks mistaken for gunshots

Several reports of gunshots in the downtown Sandusky area Saturday night can likely be attributed to a do-it-yourself fireworks display.

Police received several calls from areas surrounding downtown, including Camp, Decatur, Market and Perry streets, but couldn’t locate the source of the noises, according to a Sandusky police report.

One caller eventually spotted the culprits: individuals shooting off fireworks from atop the downtown parking garage at Columbus Avenue and West Market Street. Police responded to the area at about 11:45 p.m. but couldn’t find anyone.

They did, however, find one discharged firework and one that had not yet been set off on the top floor of the parking garage.
