FULL STORY Another reputed gang member alleged to be involved in the Sandusky summer shootings is behind bars.
Police arrested Denarea L. Swain, 23, late Friday morning at a Campbell Street home, Sandusky police Det. Sgt. John Orzech said.
“We are happy to have his arrest,” he said. “We know the community’s interested in getting these cases concluded.”
Police said Swain fired a gun in the June 12 shoot-out between rival gangs at Hancock and Neil streets. About a dozen shots were fired into a crowd of people. One bullet hit a bystander in the leg.
The shooting is believed to have been over a personal dispute between Swain and Elisha C. Cannon, who are suspected members of rival gangs.
Cannon is serving three years and six months in prison after he pleaded guilty in October to felonious assault in Erie County Common Pleas Court for his role in that shooting, as well as a July 19 shooting on Huntington Drive in which another person was shot in the leg.
A warrant was issued by secret indictment in August for Swain’s arrest. Police found him Friday at the home of Lavar Glinsey.
Glinsey, 24, was charged with obstructing justice for allowing Swain to stay with him and for trafficking in marijuana after officers seized about 200 grams of marijuana. Glinsey is not believed to have been involved in the shootings, Orzech said.
Swain is charged with attempted murder, felonious assault, two counts of having a weapon while under disability, and improper discharge of a firearm.
Officers tried to arrest Swain in July at his home on Wamajo Drive. They did not find Swain but did find between 20 to 25 grams of crack cocaine, with an estimated street value of $100 per gram. For that Swain was also charged Friday with preparation of crack cocaine for sale, and possession of crack cocaine.
Swain is a suspect in other shootings that occurred over the summer, but there is not enough evidence to charge him. Orzech would not disclose what other shootings Swain may have been involved in.
Swain has a long criminal record, including carrying a concealed weapon, intimidation and resisting arrest.
