The Lakeside-Marblehead man, 57, called Perkins police at about 9 p.m. and reported the gun stolen.

When the man and his daughter went to a Crossings Road restaurant to eat at about 7 p.m., he placed his holstered handgun under the passenger seat of the rental vehicle, while his daughter placed her purse under the back seat, the report said.

When he returned to the car about an hour later, the gun was missing but the purse was still in the car. The man told police he is certain he locked the vehicle, and he’s also certain the gun did not fall out of the car, the report said.

Police entered the gun information — a .45-caliber Springfield with a 13-magazine clip — into a database, listing it as stolen.

That was my first thought. Was there any signs of forced entry to the car? Pry marks? Broken windows? Did he call from the parking lot when he found it missing? Or did he wait and call it in later?
