Brandi Steible, 35, of the 800 block of Warren St., was charged with failure to report a crime.
A Perkins police officer recognized Steible at Kroger at about 5 p.m., knowing a detective had been trying to reach her regarding a Feb. 11 fire at the vacant America’s Best Value Inn near Ohio 2 and Milan Road, the report said.
Detectives and prosecutors had already conferred about Steible’s knowledge of the incident, agreeing she would be charged with failing to report if she did indeed know who set the hotel fire, the report said.
Two teenage boys were arrested a few days after the fire, each charged with arson and breaking and entering. Detectivessuspected Steible knew of the boys’ involvement, but they said she never came forward with details.
On Thursday at Kroger, Steible admitted she’d received a call from one of the boys the night of the fire. He had asked her for a ride home from Toys R Us, the report said.
She knew something was amiss because she’d dropped one boy off at the mall earlier that evening and it also sounded as if he was running, Steible told police.
After she’d picked up the boy and his friend, he told her he’d just been inside the hotel. As they pulled out, they passed police cruisers with lights and sirens blaring.
“Ms. Steible stated she did not return to the area because she knew (the boys) did something illegal,” the report stated.
Before the boys were arrested later that week, one had confided to her that he started the fire, the report said.
Officers issued Steible her charge and released her.
